Memorial weekend camping in WI
« on: June 01, 2011, 09:13:00 PM »
Every memorial weekend, my siblings and our friends go up north near Mountain, WI to ride the trails in the Nicolet National Forest. There are all kinds of trails for all types of trucks. This year we had 6 trucks in our group: a GMC on 35's an s10 on 39.5" tires, two jeep cherokees on 33's, another jeep cherokee on 42's, and my 87 sami on 31's. Here they are.

We set out on Thursday evening hoping to arrive early and get a late night trail ride in. As soon as we arrived, everyone got their trucks off the trailers and were ready to go. My friend James in the red jeep decided to play around in the mud holes around our camp and immediately broke an axle shaft.

So we were already down one rig and decided to pack everyone in the other trucks and head out. The first night was pretty successful. No one broke anything. Got muddy. Had a good time. Here is the sami after the first night.

The next day was pretty similar. Fixed the broken red jeep and just rode the trails all day. We had one problem that day but it wasn't serious. The blue jeep on 42's broke his radiator and ran out of coolant, so we had to tow him back to camp. Here is the good part tho

Yeah that is me in the sami pulling the jeep back.

We went on a night run that night down to some of the more muddy deep holes. That is where the red jeep had problems again. Went in a hole that was a little too big for it and it sucked water in the engine and blew a valve we think. To add to the pain, we tried to clear out the water in the cylinders and ended up shooting that valve piece through the engine block. So we parked it on the trailer and used it for parts the rest of the weekend which would come in handy. There was also some problems with the s10. It was trying to pull out the green jeep that was buried and blew out the rear end.

Later that night, the guy with the green jeep decided to go out with someone he knew and he rolled his rig. Suprisingly, he broke nothing and barely dented the truck. The guy he was with tho broke a tie rod end and he had to drive the truck home, so we borrowed some parts from the broken jeep and helped him get going.

The next day was mostly spent fixing all of the broken trucks. I might add that the sami had still not had one problem.  ;D Once everything was fixed and ready to go, we went out again. This time we were doing some more technical obstacles. Everything was all well until the green jeep was reversing and broke both of the ball joints on one side, so the entire knuckle fell off, leaving the tire on the ground. That was quite the extraction to get that rig back to camp. It took almost 4 hours to get it back. We had to take the duramax with the gooseneck down the trail, winch the jeep into position, rig up a rail for the jeep to slide up the ramps, and then try to get the duramax back up the trail to the road. That was quite the adventure.

The next morning we went to the parts store to get parts and also borrowed some from the broken jeep and fixed the green one right up. After that was all done, we went to breakfast at a diner a half hour away. We ate and then had some drinks at the bar. After about two hours, a few pitchers, and 4 rounds of shots we were ready to head to camp. When we went outside, we decided it was a good idea to buy a little girls pink bicycle for $5. Not the safest idea.

We went riding the rest of the day. The blue jeep broke a hub and had to do another extraction. This one was not as troublesome. The sami had a slight problem. We swapped springs the week before we left and had to get new u-bolts made. Apparently we didnt tighten them enough throughout the weekend. We knew they would stretch and settle but it got away from us. The rear leafs in the springs twisted and stabbed into the tire. That was an easy fix tho. We had two people lift the rear end, fix the spring, and tighten up the bolts. We were ready to ride again.

That pretty much wraps up the weekend. Its a hell of a time every year and Im sad to see it go. I don't know why exactly but the DNR is shutting down the trails for next year.

Here are some pics from the weekend:

Looked Like It Was A REAL Hoot.

Shoot Me A PM the next time your bunch is going to meet.
I have relatives up in that area, all though, I am not much into Mud Submarine-ing My Sammy.
The rest of the trails looked COOL!

Yeah its not my favorite, but its what everyone else likes to do so I go along. I'd like to get into some more technical driving since im still quite a novice. I've only been out in my sami a few times and it was mostly just mud, so I still have no idea what my rig is capable of.
