Lockers and LS for trackicks
« on: June 23, 2009, 10:34:57 AM »
I want to through a limitted slip dif in my sidekick but having a hard time finding one. All the shops have been back ordered on these for awhile (12 bolt). Does anyone know if suzuki ever had a stock LS in the USA? Any model? I'm also thinking about just running a locker instead if I can't find a LS for a good price. What are you running and how is it working for you?

BTW this is a daily driver.

I had the same questions about running a LS vs. spools vs. autolockers vs. selectable...The guys helped me out on THIS topic:

Pretty informative
PLUS you might want to let us know your year, make, model, powertrain, etc.  A lot of people on here can tell you what they have in their comparable rig and how it works for them.

Thanks Dan. I did a search and couldn't find anything. Guess computers just don't like me. I'll check out that link.

I have a 93 4door kick with the 5.12 gears and think its a 12 bolt ring gear. I'm willing to put in a differant axle and have thought hard about the ford 8.8 but worried about the wieght and girth. Also I have a dual t-case set-up with a sami case.

I'm keeping mine more basic on 30's installing the 3" calmini suspension now, but the most interesting/common/popular thing is the Toyota axle setup...also opens up your options for lockers and gearing, whereas Geo/Suzuki is somewhat limited on these kinds of options.  That topic I posted is two merged, so it is even more informative than it was before.  Depends on what you're using it for, pretty much, I got a lot of advice on it, and figured I was best keeping it low to the ground, keeping my stock 1.82 4LO and 5.12 diff ratios on a 30" tire and have open differentials for now...why?  Cause it's a "basic" hunting rig.  The lift I am installing (and tires) are MORE than enough for the "basic" trails I will be using for hunting

Install is a bit tougher then a standard locker, what with the airlines and all.  Price = Expensive.  Expect to spend around 1800-2000 for both front and rear, depending on what you use for an air pump.  If you keen an eye out you can find them used for good deals.

But they are pretty cool.  :)

So I've heard.  If I start hitting heavier trails than I expect to now, and start upgrading differentials and axles, I might spend the money (and time) on ARB, that's why i'm leaving it "open" for now...for future (ARB) upgrades ;D

The ARB selectable locker setup is by FAR, the best upgrade I've made to my Tracker. Yes, it's expensive, but the benefits are HUGE. Lock the rear and front, or just the rear, all with a simple dash mounted switch. Turn them off, your driving a normal oopen diffed ride. They are Great. Combine the ARB's with a twin stick to get use of 2 wheel low, and locked the Tracker can do amazing things. Yes it's a bit more difficult to install, but any good garage mechanic can do it. Careful routing of the airlines, good assembly techniques, and common sense and you'll have a relabile and capable install. Another added benefit is ARB's US distributor. They are Fantastic with customer service. Willing to spend as much time as necessary to help, and not once have I paid for a replacement part, none of which was they're fault, 2 Complete sets of Dash switch covers they replaced after I broke them! A compressor pressure switch that I broke the tab off, ALL NO CHARGE INCLUDING SHIPPING, and they tossed in 3 really nice OME/ARB keyfobs!

You got key fobs?  Rock!  I want some... :(

A second advantage of the ARB is your axles tend to last longer.  Your not putting a strain on them with normal driving and you can turn them off when backing up to help stop binding.  I would like to try out a KAM locker though, I like the idea of electric instead of air powered.

I've looked at them both ...

Pricewise the KAM is more expensive, until you add in the cost of the air compressor that the ARB would require and the installation of the KAM involves a bunch of cutting and welding, which the ARB does not.

The bonus is that with the ARB, I can use the air compressor to air up the tires (yeah, I know that would mean the larger, more expensive of the two compressors) - but I'm killing two birds with one stone, so I think the ARB would get my vote.

Funny, just today my wife called me, frantic, couldn't get her lugnuts off and had something jammed in her tire. I drove down in the Tracker, jacked her Merc up, took off the wheel, pulled the offending screw, plugged it, FILLED the tire with my ARB compressor, and she was back on her way. This is the third time I've rescued a damsel in distress with my ARB. Yeah, I love it. AND, I'm still running with my original aluminum front housing, albiet modified. Shutting it off (locker) really does help save parts. Drone, call and ask them for one. I didn't even have to ask, they just sent them to me with my FREE dash switches. 2 different ARB fobs, and 1 OME, all that really nice ceramic multi colored type. Sweeet.

Key fobs?  Like, you mean, a wireless key fob for the ARB instead of using a switch???

I think he just means a key ring.  Not a wireless setup.

But if you are looking for a wireless setup for your winch, check out the Roadless Gear setup at http://www.roadlessgear.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?&store_code=rgl&screen=PROD&product_code=rg630  Installed one last weekend, it's pretty cool.  :)

Not sure why you would need a wireless setup for an Arb.  Unless you were driving the entire rig by remote...   If that is the case that would be pretty cool.  :D
