New to zuks, have a couple questions
« on: August 29, 2005, 02:38:43 PM »
I am new to zuks, just picked up a very used beater and I am in the process of building it back up.  Right now it is an 88 with a decent amount of body damage but it runs pretty well.  The engine smokes some but I plan on rebuilding that early next year.  Right now i have flipped the axles and installed custom shackles and small 3/4" blocks.  My tires are bald and I found a great deal on used 33" BFG mud terrains.  I can pick up all 4 with very decent tread for $100.  I am afraid that without gears the larger tires will take thier toll on my clutch and tranny.  So my question is does anyone run 33" tires on the stock gears and am I asking for trouble by doing this?  I dont rock craw much, usually just trail riding, hillclimbs and mud running.  I Would go with some thing like a 31" but these tires are just so cheap I really want to jump on it.  This is strickly a trail beater and I dont want to spend anymore cash on it than I have to.  Thanks in advance for the help

Welcome aboard Scott
33's on stock gears is going to kill your power, you'ld even be suprised how much difference 31's would make.  I'm not so sure about the Sami's but I would think that the cheapest way to run your 33's and retain stock or better power would be to do the Transfer Case gears.  In a Sami the High gear/range is reduced to give you stock like performance with the larger tires.  It's a good thing and I wish there was something like it with the Track/Kicks (Vendors if your reading this, HINT HINT 8)).
As far as running the 33's once you can turn them you'll never go back the clearance and ability to roll over things that would have hung you up before is really cool. ;D

Thanks, as it turned out I need to much drive line work to consider the high stress loads the 33" tires would place on my exles and clutch.  So far I am just working on rebuilding this thing, so far we have

-cleaned entire truck
-hooked up Cd player to factory speakers.
-pulled dents on doors so glass will roll up
-fixed all door handles
-adjusted clutch
-changed all fluids
-new spark plugs
-installed a push button start

I h ave found my rear 3rd member has alot of play and will have to come out.  Can i just replace the bearings or do i need a whole new unit.  Also my rear main seal is leaking and i think it may be part of the reason my new clutch is slipping.  last i have a leak on the drivers side front axle seal.  Not looking foward to fixing that as i have heard it is quite a chore.  The body is still in really rough shape but is coming around.  This thing is stricktly a beater so it doesnt have to be much to look at, just functional.  Even all beat to hell it has still gone where many others couldnt.  thanks for the help and I will keep everyone updated as to the progress.  I will also get some pictures up when i get a chance
