Nissan diesel swap
« on: March 07, 2010, 07:04:50 PM »
I just swapped a nissan sd22 diesel and 5 speed into my 87 samurai.  I want to clean up the wiring under the hood but don 't want to screw anything up.  What does the stock computer affect now that the original motor is gone.  I have unplugged the ecm and don't notice any problems.  Can I just eliminate all the stock harness that attached to the old motor or does the ecm affect anything in the dash?  Here's a pic of the diesel installed. Thanks for any advice.

You could pull the harness and save it for future whatever, gas engine
replacement or sell it to someone if it's needed, if the Diesel is running
then you have all the needed wires, there might be an issue with body
wiring and ECM to engine wires, but you will just have to look and see

Did you have to cut the firewall or do a body lift to get it to fit ?

I didn't have to cut the firewall , but did cut and enlarge the transmission tunnel on the passenger side to fit the nissan 5 speed transmission.  I have done a spring over axle lift using jeep yj springs all 4 corners, and the trailtough kit up front for the yj springs.  I think the oilpan would hit thefront pumpkin with out the  spring over lift.  You could just do a springover with the stock sammi springs.  With this setup, I am running 31 inch tires and have way more power than the stock samurai motor. For someone that is handy with mechanical skills I would recommend this set up.  Cheaper than a vw kit.  Just drop in the motor and tranny, remake the intermediate shaft to the t-case with the nissan front and suzuki back flange.  I had to move my t-case back about 6 inches.  Shorten my back driveshaft, lengthen my front driveshaft, and work out a few bugs.  I also run an electric fan in front of the rad pushing air in as I had no room for the stock fan on the motor.  Hope this helps you out. Here's another pic.   Norm

Good to hear that the swap is still working out.   Have you done anything else for gearing?

Stock gears, nissan tranny is geared close to same as samurai tranny, and stock t-case, running 31 inch tires, can pull 80kph in fourth and still have fifth gear togo!  Working out great so far.  Will have to see what kind of mpg it will get.  Norm

Just curious, but what did the Nissan motor and trans come out of? I didn't know they made a Diesel except in forklifts. Thanks

Shoot I'd love to do this swap but in a 93' 4 door Sidekick with a trail slayer kit in it. I'd have to use the sammy transfercase though cause in Calif. you have to get the donor motor from the same class of vehicle, meaning a passenger car. Nissan did put some diesels in the Maxima in the early 80's that might just work ;)

Ed, correct me if I'm wrong about this.  In CA we have to abide by these regulations for engine swaps...but since it is a diesel swap, the vehicle becomes re-designated as diesel and therefore smog exempt...wouldn't it be exempt from that regulation as well since there would be no more smog regulation required on the vehicle?  I'm pretty sure about this but didn't look into it.
