Tires for Winter
« on: August 31, 2005, 11:05:11 AM »
What size tires do you recommend for winter?

My personal expereince is the skinnier the tire the better the grip, when it comes to ice and snow.

Looking for Brand and sizes.

Thanks,

-Steve

Though not what your looking for,
While on Ice I've found that width means very little, it's the tire rubber (softer being better) and siffining (well the little slitts going sidway on the tire) that makes a difference.  As always a good fresh tread will do better than a worn one.  As I've got to know the Big O tires fairly well lattely I'ld recomend there Big Foot AT's the square one.  I've not tried it on my Tracker yet but on a Nissan Frontier and Jeep Grand Cherokee they seem to do really well for a none studded tire.
Oh ya, for real traction on Ice, Studs and/or Chains are the only way to go.

From experience Ice Racing

The best Ice Tire right now is the Bridgestone Blizzack....if you Ice Race in the rubber to Ice class and don't have them you are 1/2 a lap behind

Down side...they wear really really bad on dry pavement

The second best (for those of us 1/2 a lap behind) is the Sears Ice radial....still work better than everything except the Blizzack but have much better durabiltiy.

The best snow tire i've come across is the Cooper Discoverer M+S. By far the best snow tire i've ever driven with. My fiend has them on his truck and has them studded and we ran them on our plow trucks last winter. They kick some serious but.

I've run 235/75-15 Cooper Discoverer A/T's and they work great on snow and ice, lots of siping. They're not bad offroad either except they load-up in heavy mud.

The best tires I've found in the snow have to be BFG AT's. I had a set of them on my XJ a few years back and during a "state of emergency" snowstorm that dumped over 2 feet of snow in 12 hours, I was the only one to get out of my neighborhood and one of the only cars on the road(It was legal because I'm a paramedic and was on duty). I was driving along completely un-plowed and un touched roads with drifts over the hood and never felt a single slip! Incredible tires! Whenever I'd stop, I had to poke the snow out of the grille with a stick...
Had a cool sig pic till I changed the text... sigh...
