Title: Normal RPM's
Post by: gwc656g on July 01, 2017, 10:57:16 AM
hey everone, I finally got my sidekick,  a 91 2 door 4x4.  had to settle for a automatic for the time being but am wondering what normal rpm's are.  I am sitting on 3900/4000rpm to hit 60 mph.  Is this normal?    I know I didn't buy a sports car but my toyota was around 2800 rpm for the same speed.  I want to take a 700 mile trip and dont feel good keeping the rpms that high for 15 hours [yea i know, slow down and take longer].  will/would the manual tranny solve this.

Open the hood and look up the white label. Some info there. That would help!

Suzuki engines have always been, for the most part, small displacement, high rpm designs - I can't tell you what is normal for that particular vehicle, but it doesn't sound too far off (I'm assuming you have the 3 speed auto, without over drive) - I would not be too bothered by holding 60 mph for long periods, at least not from an engine longevity stand point - they're designed to produce their power higher in the rpm range.

No - a manual transmission won't solve the problem, it's not a problem, it's the way Suzuki built them.
