Whirring/whizzing noise...Clutch??
« on: March 09, 2005, 01:55:55 AM »
Hey guys,

I searched on this, but everything I came up with seemed to be the exact opposite of what my trucklet is doing (93 2dr Geo Tracker 5sp 4x4).  When it's idling in neutral, it's fine, but the second I push in the clutch, even just a little bit, I it starts this whirring/whizzing noise.  It sounds like it's coming from somewhere in the vicinity of right underneath the firewall.  My dad said it's probably the throwout bearing, but other people say the throwout bearing usually STOPS making noise when you push in the clutch.  Anyone had any experience with this?  So far whta I've found is noises that go away when you push in the clutch, but mine is making noise when the clutch is in, and it's fine when the clutch is out.  Also, I haven't had the truck for very long, but I'm assuming it has a hydraulic clutch, but I didn't see a reservoir under the hood...am I just blind??  Any help is greatly appreciated guys.

Thanks in advance,
Bryan

First, your truck has a clutch cable.  They are not hyd.

My guess would be the transmission input shaft pilot bearing found in the center of the flywheel.

When you push in the clutch, the disc starts slowing down and will be running a different speed that the motor.  So there's a small bearing (older cars use a bushing) in the center that supports the input shaft and clutch.

After the pedal is released the engine and clutch are running at the same speed, so the bearing in no longer turning.

It sounds like you need to do a replacement of this bearing, so you might as well do a clutch disc, pressure plate and through out bearing while you have it apart.

Good luck

The sound starts as soon as you press the clutch?  That really does sound like the throwout bearing.  Doesn't the pressure plate assembly ride on the input shaft, with the end of the input shaft sitting in the pilot bearing at the end of the crank?  I had pilot bushing go out in a ford truck I had once, and I only made the sound once the clutch was COMPLETLY disengaged.  But if it makes the sound as soon as you touch the throwout bearing to the clutch disk , then I would think that would be what is causing the noise.

If you do change your clutch though, remember to put in a NEW pilot bearing at that time, amazing how lazy people get.  A bad pilot bearing makes the tranny do all the work of keeping the input shaft centered, and will quickly destroy the bearings in the tranny.

Well, thats my 2.5 cents worth.

Yeah, I just found out they have cable driven clutches, I feel stupid  ::)  But yeah, it starts making the noise as soon as I touch the clutch pedal.  I just don't want something to come apart and tear something else up in there...  I bought the truck from a friend and he said the guy he bought it from said he had just put a new clutch in it, and that was within the last 2-3 years.  I really don't want the expense of this right now, cause I'm in the middle of my Turbo 240sx Project (Tracker is my daily driver),  but I'm also not one to let something like this slide.  I do things right the 1st time.

Thanks guys, keep 'em comin!
