88 Samurai build-up
« on: November 30, 2007, 09:14:11 AM »
Hi all welcome to my build up, its not all here.  I will be posting more as i progress into it, so keep on checkin it out as it comes up.  Hopefully all goes well, and im pretty sure im gunna need some ideas from you all.  My plan is to start with my 88 samurai, Toyota axles, Yj leafs, shackel reverse, Push front axle 3" forward, rear 3" back, 81 celica power steering.  6.5:1 T case gears, keeping the 4.10s in the 3rds.

When i got the samurai it was not doing so good, but with Some TLC i got it running just fine.
This is the cab when i first got it, im pretty sure it was parked in a river for a while
(my Buddie kyler in the shot)

Next step was to adress the engine, it was not running at all really.

After new plug wires, cap and rotor, and oil change it was going.  But not to well, so i pulled the intake manifold and header, cleaned the EGR system (which was a nightmare).  Had the intake and header flange surfaced.  Then pulled the carb and checked all the smog JUNK.  Clutch fan was shot and so was the radiator (as you can see by the green coloration in it) you could touch it and it would pretty much fall apart.  So new radiator, thermostat and Flex-a-lite E-fan (works awesome!)

Here's my sami
Im in love with bald tires!  They make clean up sooo much easier! ;)

This is what i have been working on for the past couple of days
My 83 Toyota front axle.  It started out a rusty pile. ;D
(From left to right) Its the first axle

I nursed the axle back to health, started with getting it hot-tanked then glass beaded it.
It came out shine-in hard!  I then added the Sky's Toyota to samurai kit, marlin knuckle ball kit, axle truss, and i just finished up a diff cover out of an 8"  weld cap.

The diff cover came out really good, I enclosed it all just to keep mud and debris out of there. (we mostly have nasty old loggin roads with deep mud to wheel on)

This is all i have for now, im in the process of getting ARP steering arm studs, and an Aussie locker for it, But The housing should be all painted this weekend.  Ill be posting pics soon,

Thanks for reading

Just got my Aussie locker in the mail yesterday, hopefully going to put it in tomorrow.
If anyone is interested in it, i will take pics and post them on Sunday or Monday.

Oh and rear Toyota axle is being sent off to Sky manufacturing on Monday to be off-set
350 dollars later i will have  an off set housing, short side axle and a T100 axle for the long side.
Cant wait till i get it back!

Sorry for the slow progress, work and rain make it a real chore to get stuff done.

Thanks

sexy welds

haha if you are referring to the diff cover welds, those ones would be my brothers welds.  According to him he wanted to lay down some "navy certified welds"

Thanks for the posts

Ill keep the ball rolling a little bit better once i get my axle back from sky.

I thought that you had to find the t100 axle yourself and they were like 100.00 at a yard?

I thought that you had to find the t100 axle yourself and they were like 100.00 at a yard?

I just asked if they could send me a T100 axle along with my housing and short side axle.
They said that they would send it to me for 100...That sounded to good to be true.
Turns out i get a call the next day, apparently the person who gave me the quote over the phone was wrong.  The price of the axle is now 150 for them to send!!  So much for there 100-125 dollar range.  But I'm cool with it, it wasn't looking like i was going to get one local for any cheaper.

But my axle is now at Sky, they said it should be done it 2 to 3 weeks then i pay 400 and its all mine!

I also got my Aussie locker in the carrier, just wasn't sure what to set the backlash to (forgot to measure it before i pulled it apart ;D). I got the info now, so I'm off to go put the wrest of it together.  Hopefully its not a freezing ass cold weekend, i really want to paint my front axle and get it done with!  I'm running out of room for parts boxes, gotta clear some new space out.

Ill post up some more pics soon.

Its normally pretty dirty, But when he does clean it, he goes all out.
Were In Northern California (Humboldt County), there isn't a rock pile within 7 hours of us.
Its pretty much mud and sand around here. And it rains about 75% of the year  ;D
