Airbag concern 4wheeling??
« on: March 04, 2008, 01:00:43 PM »
Bit of a newbie question, but I have not seen it asked anywhere here or other sites.

Wife is concerned that the airbag could go off when off roading. :-\

My understanding is that I would have to HIT something pretty hard with some speed. The speeds that most would drive on a trail would minimize the chance of the airbag deploying. On a difficult trail, going VERY slow and hitting something may not set off the airbag.???!!!!

Am I right? I guess I should also check where my airbag sensor is, as not all are in the bumber (right?).

i've bumped into a thing or two and still have my airbag sensors hooked up, no problem YET.  you should really be watching where you're going anyway :P

You would have to hit something much harder than off road driving will allow for deployment. We have been rearended in our van and pushed into another car at 40 mph and no bags. The chances of your airbags going off with offroading is slim to none. ;)

My experience:  Had '99 2.5 GV, put in ditch avoiding a pedestrian in my lane.  Bent every side but the top.  Forward momentum was stopped and I was spun around by a post that hit just inside the tire line on the drivers side of the bumper.  No bag!

Later, daughter puts '01 GV into a railing and walkway.  Near dead center on the bumper.  Another inch and it wouolda been toast for driving.  My Ac condensor is an arc instead of a straight line.  Anyway, no bag deployment when we hit at about 5-10mph.  Discovered that the sensor is about 12-16 inches to the passenger side of the bumper from midline.

I would guess that it takes one heck of an impact, or it needs to be triggered from directly in front.  (I am presuming that my pre-owned GV's have working air bags.)

I do minimal off roading, and I do not even think about the air bag then.

Thanks, this relaxes the wife a bit.

All I have to do now is get her to believe it's perfectly normal to take the FAMILY vechical off-road.

On my 2000 GV, the sensor is inside the cab, under the dash, mounted on the tranny tunnel.  Some 4x4s, dunnon about Zooks, disable the SRS when shifted into 4Lo.

I saw this happen in 2008.  I have never heard of it happening to anyone else.  It could of been one of those perfect storm situations?
