What weight of oil
« on: September 16, 2008, 05:07:27 PM »
Just curious if anyone knows what weight of oil you guys put into your sami's. Mines an 88 with 129,000 miles and it ticks SOOOOOO loud until it fully warms up. Definitely sounds like it has too thick of oil when cold. What does the manual call for?

must agree its very easy to do. and with the oil i use 10w 30 here is a website suzukiinfo.com it will give you a full 88 samurai factory service manual and will tell you what oil to use and how to adjust your valves you need a flat head screw driver and a shorty 10mm box end wrench

Krylon?  Wow... big spender.  I'm stuck with lowly generic red...  :(  :P

I actually run 10w40 in my various toys.  Seems to work well enough.

Thanks you guys.

When you say to adjust the valves, that is because they are too 'loose' or too 'tight'. Im trying to picture what is making all that racket.

PS do these things have solid roller cams?

Noise usually = too loose. But, that's just the one's you're hearing. I'm sure there's ones that are too tight as well. Too loose = major power loss. Too tight = major power loss, and on your way to a burnt valve. Get those things adjusted. It's about a 1 hour job, some hand tools, and $5 in feeler gauges.

Thanks guys I can get them adjusted no problem but I do have a problem downloading any of the manuals you have linked to. Are they just Chilton/Haynes manuals that I could get from a store?

PS Im assuming these are solid lifter cams since they need periodic adjustment. Are they Solid Flat Tapped or Solid Rollers?

its the factory service manual the one that suzuki technicians use. i never used a Chilton/Haynes manual for a samurai but used them for a couple other cars i own and there pretty good and accurate. i took some time to copy the images off of the FSM if u cant read the text right click and click view image it will show it better.

hope this helps

Thanks a ton that was very helpful. If I cant figure out how to download one, could I buy a FSM at a Suzuki dealer or are they reserved only for thier techs?
