dropping vit Gearbox. (clutch tech)
« on: May 25, 2005, 06:13:12 PM »
i'm about to take the gearbox out of my vit, and thought i'd double check on here first, before i go ahead.

has anyone had any probs with removing one from the vit? is there anything in particular that i have to watch out for?

the way i have it is, i need to support the rear of the engine somewhere, either on the sump, or attach a block and tackle. i've also been told to put a block of wood between the dizzy, and the firewall. necessary? do i have to remove the actual dizzy?

is it possible to drop the gearbox by dropping the cross member, or do i leave the cross members and unbolt the gbox?

how heavy is a vit gbox? can i leave the vit on its wheels, or will it help if i jack the front up off the ground?

i have a 5 spd manual, and carby motor, so will i need to check for other wires? i only see about 3 that are connected to switches on the box, and the breather hoses.

also remove drive shafts, gear levers, speedo cable, and clutch cable.

does this sound about right?

thanks
Steve

I can help you with some of the questions. :)

a jack and block of wood under the sump will hold the motor in place, It may pay to remove the Dizzy cap to protect it incase the motor shifts.

The gear box cross member won't drop down as one side is ontop of the chassie bracket and will require rotating, this may be difficult withe the gearbox attached.

I would drive the front up some ramps or jack it up to allow access for the gear box to be taken out.  it is around 60kgs with t/case from memory

Also drain the oil. :)

this is what i'm going to do tomorrow, so i dont forget when i go to take the front drive shaft out and cover myself and my driveway with oil!

i learnt this lesson a while back.

and it seems as though i need to unbolt the gearbox from the cross member. and will the gearbox then be able to come out with the x member still there?

what about exhaust? will that get in the way? if i can get away with just unbolting the headers, and moving it accross a bit, will this work, if not, i will just cut the damn exhaust off, and make a new one. (hopefully)

oh yeah, what about the starter, can i leave that in, or is it attached to the gearbox?

thanks

Remove the X member then lower the gearbox down.

If you have your exhaust in the same position as standard or there abouts you can probably leave it in place.

The starter motor will need to be removed also.

Yeah you'll be removing the flywheel anyway to have it resurfaced when you replace the clutch anyway, right?

Wow, that's kinda nasty looking.

What does the throwout bearing side look like?  Is there anything damaged or sloppy-fitting there?

It may be that when you remove the clutch from the flywheel, you'll find several springs loose.

More pics!

ok, i'm getting sick of fixing stuff.

i have my gearbox sitting on the floor, right way up and all. i cant shift into 2nd, 4th, and reverse. whats going on?

i found pieces of some sort of O ring where the levers fits in and sits. could it be this?

Wow!  The dreaded disintegrating "shifter sheet" syndrome happens on 'Vits too?

(edit: This problem may be related to what caused your chutch to get mangled!)

Does this "O-ring" look like a thick piece of plastic that the pivoting ball of the shifter sits in rather than the traditional stretchy black donut shape?

Over on the SJ-413/Samurai side of the family tree, this shifter seat (found in the T-case) disintegrates and eventually causes the transfer case shifter to put the shifting mechanism in an invalid state   (usually in Neutral). Many a SJ-413/Samurai can be found for sale at great prices because of this problem.  The cost of fixing is usually less than 15 bucks.

Perhaps this is the case in your situation.  My "Sidekick"/Vitara is an automatic so I can't be positive about this.

Check with your local Suzuki dealer for a replacement part.

i'm about to take my flywheel off so it can get machined for the new clutch.

i was wondering if i have to mark its position so that it goes back on in the exact same way. if not, i'm just gonna take it off and not worry about where its position is.

i do realise its a more delicate situation putting it back in with the clutch and all.

i need clutch info please.

i'm having a hard time trying to get a HD, or up rated hi torque clutch for my vit where i live, and so i was wondering if there's any difference between the vit models.

if i cant get one for my 8v this week, i'm going to order the clutch for a 16v.

the 16v is 15mm bigger than the 8v in diameter, but not sure on clamping force. what about a 16v 4 door vit? would that have a stonger clutch? i assume the 4 dr models have the same gearbox and flywheels too.

please help, i'm missing my vit so very much.

thanks

I am pretty sure that all the 16v flywheels and clutches are the same.  All the 2 and 4 door flywheels are.  The added weight in a 16v fly wheel will be noticable in the torque increase and the reduction of HP.  :)

stock 8V clutch from factory is supposed to be 200mm in diameter. this is measuring the clutch plate. flywheels are the same for all 8V and 16V. if you go for a new or aftermarket clutch, you should always machine the flywheel first.

the most common clutch now is a 215mm diam clutch plate, which should be factory from suzuki in the 16V.

i think i am right, but am happy for people to correct me.

i am using a 215mm diam clutch now, and havent had problems yet, although i do admit, i should have forked out for the dual friction. oh well, next time.

Gear, you should be ok.
