Installing 1.3l distributor on 1.6l
« on: November 27, 2015, 12:16:12 PM »
I have an off road bush buggy. 1991 Tracker 1.6l 8V It does not run so well warm. I think it may be stuck in limp home or cold/rich mode. Since the vehicle is not going to be road driven and costs for fuel injection parts, computers etc are so high. I'm have plans to retro grade the 1.6l 8v with a samurai electronic dizzy and a Weber carbI was going to do Propane. But got cold feet on that one.
I'm new to this forum and not sure if this topic has been covered yet. Did not find anything with the search feature.

I purchased a 1987 Samurai dizzy. It has the built in igniter as far as I can tell. The dizzy mount will need some small modification with a drill to accommodate the longer shaft length.

So between the two carbs the distance between the flange and the bottom of the gear teeth is the same. But the older distributor has a little more hanging below the gear. I think there is room in the mount. But I need to roto root it out a little.

I'm wondering. Do I need to supply voltage to the coil and dizzy through a balast resistor as on a points set up?

The cam gear locations are a bit different between the 1.3 and 1.6 when using the 1.6 head. There is a work around, you would use the 1.6 dizzy mounting housing with the 1.3 dizzy. The housing needs to be drilled deeper to accept the longer 1.3 dizzy.

Here is a write up on how to do it.

Here is a discussion on the cam gear differences with illustrations.

There is another solution but is more costly and time consuming. You would pull the 1.6 cam and install a 1.3 cam. Now the 1.3 dizzy can be used with the 1.3 adapter. This switch of parts will keep the cam gear and dizzy gear in the proper place with the 1.6 head.

Yes you would need it wired as the 1.3 with condenser.

My personel opinion would not use the Weber carb, since they seem to be  troublesome setting up. The carb plates are generally warped and need to be lapped smooth. They also have some issues off camber.

The Toy250 carb works out of the with a few mods. Stay away from the ebay carbs.

Here is a thread with the info needed for the swap.

Any issues with using the '91 1.6l coil with the 1.3l distributor? Other than cutting and soldering some primary wires.
