tire size to rim size
« on: April 01, 2017, 06:43:34 PM »
I got some 15x10 rims would you or could I safely install 31x10.5x15 on the rims? would airing down not be a option as I  could blow a bead? I have 8" rims that are on my tracker with my 30's that I could use but I have the 10" rims from the 33's that I traded. don't want to blow a bead in the bush while aired down and have a chance to sell the rims.

That is a pretty close match...I don't have any experience with blowing beads firsthand, but I would say with a setup that's that close in width it is definitely more likely to roll off the rim than if you kept the 31x10.50's on your 15x8's. Also, in my opinion, it looks way better if the tire isn't flat on the side, a little bit of balloon effect is nice. The balloon look also offers a slight margin of protection to the rim and hub that way.

My personal experience that is somewhat similar, was mounting up my 235/80/17 (32x9.5/17) BFG KO's to a set of 17x8" rims. It was a huge pain in the neck getting the beads to seat because when the tires are brand new the beads are like 3 inches apart! I don't know if they would still be like that after being in service for a while but I can only imagine trying to seat the bead in the bush in inclement weather...would not be enjoyable. My advice whether you run the 8" rims or the 10" ones if you are airing down close to 10 psi...bring a compressor, a can of brake clean or ether (and your brain), something that'll throw sparks, a jack (duh), and a sturdy ratchet strap you can cinch around the circumference of the tire to help it seat up better.

I suspect a lot of the bead popping has to do with how flexible the tire is.  Heavy walled tires shouldn't roll much, especially with our weight.  I haven't had any bead issues, but my tires have always been 2" over rim width since I went away from stock tires.

In my experience it depends a lot on the tire. I run 33x10.50 Radial TSLs on 8" wide wheels and have rolled the tire far enough under the wheel that the lip of the wheel touched the ground (this was at 5psi. I run 7psi now, since it works just as well and gives me a little more tire height/ground clearance). I have never popped a bead with this tire/wheel combo.
I have also ran 34x9.50 bias TSLs on 7" wide wheels and have popped them off the bead a few times. The sidewalls are stiff on these tires and I think that is why they slip off the bead so easily. I as also trying to run these in the 5psi range. I now run 7-10psi and they stay on the wheel and work fine.
I have also tried 32x11.50 bias TSLs on stock 5.5" wide wheels. That was a terrible combo. The tires easily popped off the beads on those. I think the main reason for that is there was so much of a difference in width that the wide bead of the TSLs did not sit flat on the bead of the wheel....so it was already sloped a little, then with a little sidewall pressure it easily got pushed off the wheel. I don't recall what psi I was trying to run in those. I only had them on for testing and never even made it to the trails with them, since it was such a horrible combo.
