Replacing IAC on a 1998 Sidekick Sport
« on: August 01, 2005, 08:00:18 PM »
Okay, I know this is a loaded question, but can you guys share with this girl how to change out the IAC in simple language?  Oh, and pics would be a great advantage too.  I admit that my mechanic skills need a boost, but isn't that why I am here???
Thanks!

Signed,
Hopeful by the minute :-*

could be an idle air control, just get a new gasket and change it when it's cooled down and try not to loose too much antifreeze if you have any animals around(four legged type)that could get into it. should only be two bolts and three hose clamps  and one electric plug in.

Thanks for the info Mrfuelish!  And yes, the idle air control is exactly what I was talking about.  The Suzuki shop wants $300.00 just for the part and I didn't even ask about labor.  I looked around and found it for half that price so I thought I'd try the labor part myself.  Yippee!!

Why would you need a new one on an 98
Seems like something else would be wrong

Check it out first, Electrical parts are usually
non returnable

Wild,

I took it to a Suzuki dealer shop and they are the ones that diagnosed the problem.  They took the old one off and cleaned it, but said that the baffle is just worn out and it would have to have a new one.  The symptoms of this horrible Zuk illness is that it coughs and sputters like it is going to die when idling and also lacks power upon acceleration.  Just replaced all plugs and wires and had engine cleaned to check for any compression leaks as well so the IAC is next on the list.  I've had her since new, and even though she is a 98 model, we have driven the roads quite a bit and she is starting to show her age at 130K miles.
However, if you have any other ideas about what else would cause the same problems, please let me know.  I always welcome advice.

OK, just giving you a heads up, funny that
it would be worn out, air without dirt in it
doesn't usually wear things out.

You might want to check your air filter, and any
other places in the intake that might be leaking
dirt into the intake system.

Poor acceleration could be from an air leak also,
it would lean out the mixture, especially if this is
a Mass Air Flow system.

If you have a MAP sensor also, you may want check
and see if you have a leak in that hose too.

Alright, now I'm out of ideas
 ;)

I got a questions you changed the wires on  a 98 sidekick sport? IS it a four door or two door? My  sport just has coil pack over each spark plug. On a good note there is no map sensor on the intake wild. IT just goes straight from the air box to the throttle postion sensor. IT makes it so you can run a cone filter right off the manifold if you like.

I like the look of that cone filter!  As for mine, it is a 4 dr, and no, my bad, no wires, just plugs on that tune up as well as a new air filter.  I had to look back on receipt to double check.
As for any other compression leaks, I only know what showed as an error code on the computer....yep, the idle air control.  But now that I have new ideas, I may just have to go with that cone filter.   It's kinda sexy!! :o
