88 Samurai stuttering and power loss
« on: October 02, 2017, 07:43:48 AM »
My sammy was running fine for several weeks (I haven't had it long) and now it has no power, it is hard to keep running, it stutters and backfires.  Here is what I did:

-replaced the fuel filter
-put Sea foam in the tank and carb
-Sprayed carb cleaner in the carb trying to get it in the tubes
-drained the gas tank and re-filled

Then my starter died, so while waiting for a starter I:
-checked hoses for air leaks, found several leaks and fixed them
-replaced spark plugs and wires
-replaced PCV valve

One I got the new starter in it seemed fixed, but 20 miles and 40 min into a test run all the problems were back.  If I can get it to start accelerating at high RPM I can get to about 35 MPH in third but within a couple seconds at high RPM it will die, if I keep the gas down the engine completely dies, if instead I pump the gas I can get a little acceleration that lasts for a few seconds till it dies again.  It doesn't run at all at medium throttle and will idle when cold but not when warm.  I've read all the posts I can find on related symptoms but none seemed to match exactly.  I'd welcome any advice or ideas.  Thank you.

Sounds a lot to me like fuel starvation, possibly related to a dirty carburetor - there were a couple of different carbs used on the Samurai, depending on the country of sale, what carb do you have?

It is the stock carb on a US sold  Samurai.
