I have comtemplated this scenario many many times. I was going to get a new GV to replace my pickup. the GV towing capacity of 3000 lbs is right about a sammy flat towing set up ( A bit more for my sidekick) but you will be using the GV for all of the braking and the big tires have alot more rolling resistance.

So if you found a light weight trailer with brakes it should roll better and it won't fry your brakes coming down the hills even if it is a bit over 3000.

I think I would probably do the trailer route and take my time. I flat tow my sidekick and it pulls great flat towing behind my ram. I usually flat tow if the trail is easy or less than like 2 hrs away. If it's further I rent a trailer from united.  (I figure if I break something major I can run home and get parts(or a trailer) if it's only 2 hrs away. 3 hrs and more just sucks!

My plan is to by a newer toyota tacoma. More HP, torque and towing capacity (6500lbs) than my 99 ram 1500.  plus it gets better gas mileage.
