$100 Tracker

$100 Tracker

So, a friend of my uncle's pulled up today while I was working on my Tracker, and told me that there was a guy in a nearby town that had a Tracker that he needs to get rid of. It runs on 3 cylenders (supposedly has a burnt valve)... but the big thing is that it runs. I get payed tomorrow, so I think I might head over and check it out, and possibly purchase it. The valve job shouldn't be that hard... I've done one on my current Tracker, and it runs like a top.

My question: What are some things to watch out for? What should I check out in particular? What are some big no-no's that I should be aware of?

I'd at least pull the plugs and check them out. This should give you an idea of the combustion chamber prior to pulling the head. Also, do a compression check when the plugs are out. You never know, the owner may never have done a tune up and it may just be a bad plug, plug wire, cap, rotor, injector, etc. Do note that some owners only drive and never do any maintenance. So don't lead on any findings you get when talking to him.

But heck, get it for the $100, and if anything, you could part it out for 3 times that at least. Door idea: take the doors and make them 1/3 doors for that doors off feel with actual doors on.  

I'd also do the normal review of the brakes, lights, wipers, ac, etc. Pull up some rug to check for rust on the floor. Take for a test ride around the block, and get a good feel about what the $100 is buying....

Thanks for the advice jagular7.

I have a sneeky suspicion that it'll be all rusted to hell, just like every other Tracker up here... but that's really no problem if I decide to make it into a beater truck, but probably would if I were going to try to resell it.

If it'll fire up, I'll buy it. I was told the owner had a compression test done on it, and there wasn't any compression on one of the cylenders. I dunno if they did any further testing to see if it was, indeed, a burnt valve.

I've already got one parts Tracker, why not get another ;D

I'm calling the guy tonight... possibly go look at it. I'll let you guys know what happens.

if u buy it for 100 bucks u can atleased turn it into scrap metal and make 300 bucks lol

take it to a pick n pull or something they will give u atleased 250 =)

$100 trackers are well worth $100 O fun.  We wheeled the pee pee out of a few of them on the powerlines at my buddy's house.   ATV trails, mud holes, It was a rally cross race, puddle blazing, jumping, follow the leader, tracker bashing good time.  One was T-boned the other was a rust bucket, Both were parted out for sammy projects.  

Mid-Night Run up Kodack / Rky Mtn loop (Zuwharrie 04)
This sammy was built from the donor rust bucket.
        (38's 4.62's 16v MPI, full width kick rear, SPOA only...
It was pitch black,  amazing what a flash and a good camera will do...  ANd I got to drive  ;D  Notice the passenger bracing for the unseen rocks...
