383 stroker ;)

Seriously though, if you go with a 4.3, it's gonna require changing a lot more stuff than just the engine. You'll need a new trans, transfer case, axles, drivelines, etc. and that's going to destroy the light-weight component of the Samurai.

The 1.6L or the 22re will probably be the most economical and light swaps, since all you need for the 1.6L is an adapter and the 22re you can use the trans and tcase without gaining an assload of weight.

i think a little diesel would be cool. a ford 300 I6 would be really cool if it can fit. You'd have to reinforce the entire frame so you don't twist it like a wet rag I'm sure but I6's are freaking awesome. I don't know what twin cam I6's are out there but it would be even better to put one of those in I bet.

a 22RE would be cool cause they are hella cheap to build and easy to find parts for..
2000 Grand Vitara.. boondox coil spacer lift w/ pro comp 2 inch lift shocks and ome struts. 225/75 R16 Kumho Mt's, powdercoated wheels, rear brake line relocation and stuff to acomodate. custom exhaust and intake along with some 1 off accesories.

I am glad I am not the only one to think of this... I hate ford with a passion (Comes from years of racing) but I did own/dug out of my yard and old f-100 with a 300 I6 and that thing was bullet proof and made a ton of torque, downfall is it probably wasnt much lighter than a SB Chevy...

yea, you can really get some great low end out of an I 6. I don't know if it's proactical but BMW has some all aluminum twin can I6's that are probably hella powerful. my friend does dry pavement drifts with his rear wheel drive Inline 6 bmw sedan. it's bone stock too

i work for a toyota fork lift company the 4 bannger they use is similar to a 22r
it runs on propane witch means you can vertualy run upside down if it wasnt for oil loss
they also run a hydrolic pump of the timing chain witch is great for hydro steering
im doing this conversion this winter along with dana 44s and 4 link
the engines are a little pricey but a good used one is pretty easy to find
and better then fuel injection also hydr steer is trick

1.6 16v.

Seriously, I've been around Samurai with all of those swaps, or have owned and done them myself, and the 1.6 16v is definitely the most. It's simpler to do, weighs less, and has great power to weight.

I've actually had a 4.3 equipped Samurai owner tell me after he had sold that rig and built another with a 1.6 16 valve that if he had done the 1.6 16 valve first he would have never built the 4.3 machine because the 1.6 16v engine combo was that much better. He kept the 4.3 Samurai only for two seasons and had the 1.6 16v Samurai for much, much longer.

One of the first questions to ask is: Do you want to keep the characteristics, other than slow, of a Samurai? The answer to that question could help guide you.

1.6 16-valve and you can do an honest 90 mph with 30" tall tires or less fairly easily. (stock 1.6 16v engine, stock exhaust, etc...) Cruising at traffic speed is effortless. For that matter, the 1.6 8-valve would work similar, top speed would be less but driving in traffic on highway or freeway is no problem.

i like how my 8v works in my 2 door, my 4 door had the 1.8L and it is a great motor. in my last toyota truck i had a 5mge in it. out of a older supra. had loads of power and speed. i could spin my 35" kralwers on pavement for as long as i wanted.LOL
didn't do it to much, if you have seen the price of the tires.

if i ever have to swap out my motor, i would look at the vw diesel, or a jeep 4cyl and convert it to propane. i have a buddy with the propane one in his sammi and he likes it.

must consider the price of gas these days, i know you americans still have it a bit cheaper then us up here in canada. but it will only get more expensive.

I can honestly say all of what he said here is true. The lil red sammy is a different car with the 16v.
