I need minimal 4x4 usage and lots of highway travel. :) I'd get a 4cyl but I can't find any in my area at this time.

Our 03 Grand Vitara 4 door with the 2.5L V6 and auto trans gets about 19mpg around town.  Last time I towed something, albeit very light and with the OD off I got around 16mpg down the highway.  As far as I know all of the 99-05 Suzuki Grand Vitaras and Vitaras and Chevy Trackers similarily equipped get about the same mpg.

As stated in the latest issue of FOURWHEELER Magazine the 2006 XL-7 gets ver 17MPG average on/off road and a friend of mine with a 2004 says he gets well over 20mpg. You're not going to get much better fuel economy than that with a V6 SUV.

Good luck in your search.

I have a 2.0 V6 and get 26 mpg around town and 28 mpg on the open road.
If you boot it this decreases of course to about 20 mpg.
I am very hapy with the economy of this vehicle - surprised in fact.

V6's - they sound sooooooooooooooo good ;D

Unfortunately the 2.0L V6 was never available in the USA or Canada.

I know its a sheep, but my wifes Liberty v6/auto/4x4 averages about 18-19 mpg (70/30 highway to local ratio) in the summer.  pure city driving gets her about 16mpg and pure highway driving would get about 20, even 21 if you drive as slow as my wife ;)  When towing my Samurai I got about 10-11mpg

My current dream machine is a 4 door, 4x4 TracKick with a 1.9  VW Turbo Diesel under the hood. The VW diesel is one of the most dependable, long-lasting engines made. Should get around 35 MPG or so. And it is a DIESEL  ;) which means I can always run it on vegi oil, biodiesel, etc.

I'm currently building up a 1.6 VW diesel to swap into a 2 door TracKick as my economical trail buggy.
