Air box mods on 16valve???
« on: March 24, 2003, 03:37:00 AM »
Ive been thinking of modifing my airbox on my 97 tracker for more air flow. It has a 16 valve. Has anyone done this and if you have was it a noticable difference. Any downsides?

Glen swears by the ARB snorkels. I spoke to a Sami owner at the Dixie Run (Tellico) last year that had a homemade snorkel, no airbox w/ K&N instet on top of it, and he swore by it. I also ran into a lowrider Kick in Cookeville that had a Acura Integra aftermarket tube in place of her Box (chrome 3 1/2 tube w/ K&N slip on filter, like on most built street racers) She also swore that it was a great improvement.

I was just wondering. What do they do with the MASS senors? I would like to have something other than the box in the samurai to take up less room.

I am not a very big fan of K-N type filters. I have always found dirt making its way through up the intake tube. I was thinking more allong the lines of mabey using a stock type 98 Chevy Tahoe air filter. Its alot bigger and its a canister style which should make for an easier swap. I just dont want do mess with a good thing if my gas milage is going to suffer a lot.

I'm looking into using some exhause tubing bent to replace the plastic intake hosing on a 16 valve.  connecting it with those rubber bushing things and band clamps and then putting a ricer style cone filter.  Hopefully this will keep out the water. :-/

When I drilled mine it just made more noise,
no more power.

If i wasn't runing a snorkle on my 8V then i would have put a hood scoop right in the lid to the air box and the cut a hole on the hood.  it would be like tha shackers of the 70s.  but don't forget to put a V-tec sticker on the side for an extra boost.  :P  lata stu
