another alternator bites the dust

anybody else have problems with their alternators dieing?  the one that came with the tractor lived a year.  the second from the wreckers lived 8 months.  the second from parts tracker lived one trip.  the brand new hitachi? or champion lived one wheeling.  WTF?

are they maybe getting a bit wet?  I do believe that the voltage and wiring mixed with water shortens their life.  Although it seems a little too short if you are down to one per trip.

I have had a few problems with mine. Have you had a look at yours to see what the problem is. I found that I was getting dirty water in the brushes when wading. When the water evaporated the residue left was causing the brushes to stick. All it needed was the brushes cleaning up and it was OK. I ended up coating them with a light weight waterproof bicycle grease (can't remember what it was called). I tried Petroleum jelly originally but it was too thick when cold and it wouldn't  charge until it warmed up.

I may have to try it in a day or two, the idiot light never comes on, the battery is completely dead from driving an hour home without touching brakes or even turnsignals.  Thought it would have been dry enough after the trip home.   I think the voltage regulator cant take being crammed full of mud and overheats

Oh yeah, now you've reminded me. My idiot light came on but was so dim it could only be seen at night  ???.

I got 3.5 years out of my first one with lots of mud and water wheeling, then all of a sudden it just died completely and I couldn't even drive the 1.5KM home as the battery had died too as the idiot light didn't come on  ???

This is where 16v with MPI sucks, no battery - no go ! :(

On to my second one now out of my parts trucklet, fingers crossed for another 3.5 years out of it  ;)

mine is TBi, last time the battery was so dead, the rpm gauge didnt even budge, but somehow the ecm and fuel pump ran on.  The only reason I know something is up cause the turn signals click but dont blink. 

Anyhow, someone needs to make an external volatage regulator that can be mounted to a big a$$ cooling fin

and went off, but somehow the trucklet was still running

quick questin, if the alternator produces 3 phase alternating current, why does it need brushes?  brushes are for dc.

Not 3 phase, AC ~ current
3 phase requires another set of windings 120
degrees out of phase (if I remember right) to
the windings that produce the single phase
cycle current

As for the brushes, I think they help in the process
of getting the alternator going at a low RPM. Not all
AC motors are induction, which have no brushes, some
like your hand drill and many small motors that are used
for work have brushes, these motors do not need a starter
winding and capacitors to get them moving, and have lots
of power at slow RPM speeds. Have you ever tried to use a
single speed hand drill ? not as much fun as a variable speed,
I break too many drill bits with them  ;)

ok, I thought it was a multi phase alternator... my bad.  I still dont get the brushes.   must be used for self excitation

Because the windings turn  ;D The FSM shows it as a 3 phase motor with one field coil (rotor coil) and three stator coils.

A bad battery (with a dead cell) can kill a good alternator.  You should replace them both together.  The alternator will run at full voltage all the time trying to charge a battery that can't hold charge, so they burn up, and can be ruined in a week or 2.

Replace the battery cables too, especially the ground.

the old battery is only 2 years old.  she just got a brand new 1000cca battery so I could move her around
