Dead Tracker -- 1998 1.6 manual trans -- fuel issue?
« on: October 05, 2008, 03:38:35 PM »
Hiddy ho,

The Barbie-car decided to not start a week or so ago (just before vacation).  Anyhow, drove it around that day, stopped for dinner.  And stayed stopped!  No start, but plenty of regular starting sounds.  Would not even run as expected with ether (really bad erratic stuttering versus a couple of seconds of ether fueled running and then dieing).

Cracked the fuel lines, had gas, still nothing.  Due to recent work replacing the cap and rotor (water had gotten into them), I inspected the pick up assembly and found it corroded.  After breaking an amplifier lead and getting another distro from the junkyard I tried to get it to start last night.

I could get it to try and run if I continuously pumped the throttle (I wouldn't call it idleing, just sputtering at a sub idle speed).

I checked the fuel rail pressure:  ~40 psi -- spec.  And it holds more than minimum pressure for the 1 minute test.  changed the fuel filter anyhow (I already had it, might as well).

No new codes.  Unfortunately, I didn't write down the one code I had last week (I have since cleaned the battery terminals and lost that code).  It was 4xxx (pretty unusable data now).  My code reader shows RPM and the ignition timing correctly.

Any ideas?  The plugs were white when I pulled them last week, suggesting a fuel problem.  But what?  Pressure is correct.  Code reader shows the closed throttle and varying voltage for throttle position sensor.

Ideas?

Seeing as how 24 of you looked this over, I ought to tell you what I found tonight:  I had the timing off just a little too far.  Yeah!

Still not sure why it died in the first place, though I suspect the distro was going (really corroded under the weather plate).  The only other thing it could be was the cam jumped time, and seeing as how it is running like normal (under powered and 165k of hard miles), I highly doubt it.
Enjoy!

Sounds to me like the timing belt skipped a notch.
