'90 Tracker timing/valve lash issue
« on: August 13, 2005, 09:46:25 PM »
I posted this yesterday on Pirate, with no response....

Sooooooooooooooooooooooooo.......................

I'm assembling my Tracker's engine after rebuild... and Maybe I just am not reading it right.... but... in the Haynes manual, it advises you to place the #1 cyl at TDC on compression. Then adjust the valves indicated in the pics. One of those is the #2 Intake valve. Which can't be right since the cam lobe is up in that valve at that point.

I had the same issue when I replaced some valves about a year ago. I felt the same way then, but I adjusted it as directed. That netted horrid clatter. I adjusted it by turning the engine over and adjusting valve lash with the rocker arms resting on the cam about 180* from the top of the cam lobe at max lift. By eye, ofcourse.... Anyway, 90% of the racket went away and the engine ran fine.

How wrong is that manual?
How wrong am I?

In my opinion

If thats how the manual is reading...you're right and the manual is wrong. I always adjust the valves with the cam at 180 degrees from the peak of the lobe. In other words when there is no lift.

I don't like the books method, I just
do 1 cylinder at a time, start with #1
adjust valves, turn the crank 180*
adjust #3, turn crank 180* adjust
#4 turn crank 180* adjust #2 turn
crank 180 degrees and you are back
at firing #1, this is a good way to learn
the firing order, and watch your distributor,
you will soon see if you put it back in right

Of coarse you need to turn the engine
the right direction for this to work, but
I would think you know that if you are
this deep into a rebuild

Great question and good pointing
out the book is not the Bible when
it comes to engine work, use your
own good judgment

I used the Haynes manual and it worked out right for me? Although I do not like the Haynes manual for this car-too many cars grouped together and alot of wrong info. How is the Chilton? I can't find it. How is the Geo FSM? I can't find one.
Thanks,

Thanks for the replys. I had read that part several times thinking I missed something, but it clearly points out the errant valve in the pic. I hoped I had not missed anything.

I have not seen a Chilton for this vehicle. I had a Haynes manual when I had a '93 Metro. I thought it was a good manual. The one for my ZJ and the XJ I used to have were decent as well. This is the first time I ever encountered anything wrong with a manual. I am going to try and make contact with them and see what the mixup is.
