FNG Here, 16V Sammi Swap Q's
« on: January 19, 2004, 02:48:54 AM »
:)  Mornin' ya'll.  I'll soon be purchasing a Sammy with full intentions of swapping out the 1.3 for a 16V 1.6L engine.   :D

My first question is what year's of Tracker, Kick, Swift, etc. I should be lurking my local salvage yards for?  When I find the correct model(s), what will indicate whether I'm looking at an 8V or a 16V?

Also, there are several companies out there doing re-wires of the 16V harness to plug into the sammy.  Can anyone reccommend just one?

I'm looking forward to this project and I appreciate any help to these (and I'm sure, many more in the future) questions.   ;D

Thanks, in advance.

First off, I wouldn't suggest the engine swap be your first modification to your brand new Samurai. The 1.3 will work fine for stock to mild builds.

I've personally done only the 1.6 8-valve swap and have been quite satisfied with it. However, the 16-valve is faster and a more 'modern' engine in it's control and design.

Identification: 8-valve engines look just like 1.3 except taller, The cc number is stamped on the block down by the flywheel on the drivers side. Look down past the brake booster. [Sidekick and Trackers 89-94] 16-valve has a huge 16-valve stamped on the valve cover and really the whole engine looks different.[Sidekick and Trackers 95-98]

Mechanically, they take the same adapter kit to bolt them to the Samurai transmission.

There's more, I'm sure. :)

Good Luck, -Eric

Thanks for the input, Eric.

I plan to do other mods, lift, gears, etc., but the engine swap was the one I'm most excited about.   :D

I'll likely be scouring the local salvage yards soon for a good donor.

Ryan,
Look for a pre 95 16V kick or tracker. They are the ebd1 setup and the easiest swap. Make sure to get the complete wire harness and ecu.  Also you will need the speed sensor in the speedometer.  If you don't have a fuel injected samurai I would suggest trying to get the fuel injected samurai tank with the fuel pump.

Luvmyzuki,

Thanks for the input.  I had forgotten about looking for the OBD-1 type motors, thanks for reminding me.

Can you tell me what years of Tracker or Kick to look for to get the 16V version?  I understand pre-95, but is there a start year?  Was the engine optional, or standard for those years?

Now that I know how to identify one, that makes it easier.

And, if you know, what's a fair price to pay for the engine, harness and ECU?  I think my loacal Pick-a-part said like $400 for the motor, maybe another $150 for miscellaneous parts.

A couple more questions........

1.  Can I use the 1.6L air conditioning setup on my Sammy, if it was so equipped?
2.  Would you recommend using the 1.6L PS setup, or would I be better off adapting a Toyota power steering setup?

Thanks much for the help.

When I bought mine I paid $550.00 for everything. That included the Steering.  I took the AC off due to relocationd of the power sterreng pump. The way it sits factory it will hit the steering arm going from the column to the box. I also removed the rag joint and went with a u-joint coupler.

As far as models I am not sure what year they started them in but i know the four door kicks had them in standard.  Just look for the air cleaner sitting in the left front under the hood.

Also I installed a cone filter in place of the air box and relocated the heat sensor. This increased the room under the hood.
