ECM location
« on: June 18, 2008, 05:41:30 PM »
I have a 1987 Samurai Tin Top and need to check out the ECM to see if its grounded right and the plug is tight.  I know its in the dash.  I have air conditioning and can not see up under the dash too good.  Is it behind the glove box or where????  HELP!!!!
The reason is it failed big time on the smog test today on the "CO" part.  My Tin Top is now a gross polluter!!!  So I am wanting to check some more connections before I take it to the shop.  THANKS for any help!!

If the trucklet is running, it's not the computer, but likely the sensors that feed it info.
Change the oil and CO is carbon monoxide, might be the cat is bad, also is it injected
or a computer controlled carb??? Carbs are hard on cats and if it hasn't been changed
since new, it probably needs it

Thanks for the fast answer.  Its a computer controlled carb.  The cat from what the guy I bought it from said the cat was new last year.  It looks fairly shinny still.  I did a volt test on the oxygen sensor and it varied from .2 up to .8 volts as I revved it up.  I know the computer is in the passenger side dash, but I may have to drop the air conditioner to get to it.  I want to do a sensor test off of the computers plug harness as it shows in the shop book to test if every sensor and relay is hooked in circuit or not.

A new cat last year is not always a good cat, I had one go bad
in 1 year, these new $75 cats are built cheep and don't last, mine
was an expansion chamber on my pickup, and I almost still passed
smog on my 91 chevy pull/work truck, don't tear into the dash, that's
not where the problem is, change the oil and cat, it will most likely pass
your smog check

Also check the timing and valve lash and put a fresh set of plugs in it.
