Electric Fuel Pump
« on: July 30, 2008, 07:35:40 PM »
I am still searching for the cause of a severe dead spot in my throttle. I have ruled out fuel pump failure because I have good pressure (37-38 lbs). Since my fuel gauge does not work correctly, I thought I would drop the tank to look at the sending unit. Since I have the tank out, I pulled the pump and it looks like the sock (filter) has somekind of debris in it.
Is there any way to remove the sock from the filter and clean it?

Not sure on the sock.  I have never had to clean one  I assume you have a track/kick since you have a electric pump and few sammys had that.  Did you already switch out your fuel filter, check the timing, ect?  What have you done so far?

Doh, ok I just looked up your previous post and saw its a 1.3 efi samurai.  I haven't had one of those yet.   ;D  Have two 1.6 8v efi which is the bigger brother though.  Someone previously mentions checking your vacuume hoses.  If you have checked those maybe someone can chime in and verify if the 1.3 has a MAP sensor.  On the 1.6 this can affect the fuel/air mixture and if you have a faulty one or a vacuume leak it could probably cause that.  On the 1.6 timing is set to 8 degrees btdc.  I saw yours is 10.  Maybe thats the spec on the 1.3 but i thought they were 8 degrees too.  Not that I think thats your issue.  Also, I wonder if a clogged catylitic converter could cause your dead spot.  If you could disconnect your downpipe and tolerate the noise for quick drive maybe you could test that.  Just a couple things off the top of my head.

Oh one other,  while the engine is running spray some quick shots of carb cleaner between the intake manifold and the engine block.  Not so much that you have a fire hazard.  Just listen to the rpm at idle while you do this.  If it raises or changes then you have a bad/leaky intake gasket.

This dead spot seems to be very erratic. Sometimes it runs good when its cold and bad when warn. Sometimes it is the other way around.
I was driving the other day and thought "boy, its running pretty good today". Then I stop at the next light, when the light turned green, it will hardly go.
It seems to cruise at 50 MPH or so pretty good, but getting there I almost have to run at WOT.
Starts and idles good, but there is just that on spot in the throttle that it falls on its face.
This is a list of what I have checked so far.
1. Replaced fuel filter
2. Replaced plug wires
3. Replaced plugs
4. Replaced cap & rotor
5. Ran a bottle of heet through the tank (thought I had bad fuel)
6. Checked timing
7. Checked my grounds (or the ones I can see)
8. Checked fuel pressure (37-38 lbs)
9. Checked vacuum lines
10. Pulled tank to visually look at sock. Does look like there is a little bit of somekind of debris in there
but not to bad. There also is a little debris in the tank, nothing that the filter shouldn't take care of.

I was reading some old posts last night and do agree that it might be the catalytic converter. I noticed that someone has installed a muffler that looks like it came from the junk yard. It is identified in hand writting "Honda" and a part number. I have only had this for about 6 weeks or so. Maybe the previous owner had the same problem and thought it was the muffler, so he ran to the junk yard and grabbed one that would fit.
After I get the tank back in, I will pull the converter and look at it.
