Engine sluggish, holding back.. Gas mileage BAD! Any tips?>
« on: October 26, 2005, 01:08:31 PM »
Hi guys, i just went from a ford festiva to a 94 tracker, the tracker feels like a dog compared to my little 63 horsepower festiva!, granted the festiva is alot lighter vehicle, but with the extra 20 horses this tracker should atleast be equal right?

Anyways i have a rough idle, its not really a miss, but my gear shifter shakes liek crazy..
when i get on it, it will rev out all the way to redline but its just like somthing holding the engine back.

It did light a check engine, code 15 ect and changed it, no new codes.

everyone tells me to change the fuel filter, but i can almost watch the needle drop when i drive it!

Im thinking maybe a clogged cat?

 thanks for your help,
           Jason

Time for a tune up and check out.

Replace the plugs, do a compression check,
check the resistance in the wires, check the
timing, replace the air and fuel filters, adjust
the valves and replace the cat

You didn't say how many miles, but a cat will
cost you about $90 from AutoZone for a 2"
generic fit unit

hi there, thanks for the quick reply!, i just added a cone filter and did the timing. got a little better.
next on the list is check the cat and fuel filter, then off to the plugs, wires, etc..  this crap really adds up!
with the ect sensor running my $32.00 and another $25 for the fuel filter!

hey festiva!

i put a k&n cone filter in my truck and found that it ran better with just a k&n replacement filter in the stock air box. once it got hot the engine was not as peppy when cold. also make sure the conector for the coolant temp sensor is not corroded. otherwise just give it a good tune up with quality parts (ngk plugs and wires).

if your running a 16 valve engine pick up a set of cheap spark plug wires (35.00 or so.) do not run the mono mag type(has the wraped wire around the carbon) if you have them toss em.
