Frustrated.... easy motor upgrade
« on: August 09, 2005, 03:44:00 PM »
Does nayone know and easy upgrade for the vitrara 1.6 EFI wagon... (or sidekick) as i thought the 2 litre upgrade would be an easy one however my contact in Australia tells me that there is no easy answer.. you will have to replace the whole drive train (motor, gearbox, transfer) .. does anyone know different.

need help.....

Thanks
James

If you do a search on fitting a 2.0 you'll find some answers. The basics are that the flywheel will need machining and you can keep the gearbox and t-case. You'll need to sort engine mounting as the 2.0 chassis rails are wider apart so the mounts are a little different and you'll need the ECM and loom to rewire with.

Check your State requirements as if you use an engine from a half cut the ECM may not be acceptable for emissions but an Aussie one will be fine. Also check with an Engineer about the weight difference. That can be an issue in some states.

just get your engine rebuilt for power, bump compression ratio up to 9.5 and run high test gas, k&n Filter and a performance exhaust.

That's what I said but it can be machined to work.

Hi there
If you do a search on the forum you'll find sopme notes on this swap. I've started putting the pieces together to do my wifes eventually. Yes the trans will bot to the engine but you need a custom flywheel or a 2.0L one machined to work. You will also need...
- Custom motor mounts
- Modified linkages for throttle etc
- Custom brakets for PS, Alternator, Air etc
- Different rad
- Electric fan to fit rad
- Complete 2.0 engine wiring harness and ECU if you want to stay emissions legal
- Custom exhaust front to back

CJ is also right that in Oz you have restrictions on added weight etc (I know cause he wrote it in a thread). The 2.0L ends up adding about 50# to the front of your Vit (+/-) so you need to make sure it will be legal.

How much eztra are you looking for? It may make more sense to do a good build on your 1.6/16v.

Some of the information you have received may be inaccurate! I'll give you my personal observation and experience with these engines here in the US. Hopefully, that will transfer to Australia. Since you're running a 1.6 in a Sidekick, the 1.8 or 2.0 swap would be mechanically very easy. The 2.0, 1.8, 1.6 16-valve, and 1.6 8-valve all share the same bellhousing and clutch assembly so one can bolt any combination of these four engines together to transmissions without any adapters needed! Transmission/T-case mount stays the same and the engine mounts are transferrable from one engine to another. You will, however, have to re-wire the engine to the appropriate ECM and schematic.

SO, it's good news bad news....  ;)

This is really good news.... If this is also the case around here. Looks like I'm going to search for a wrecked 2.0 L over here.... That'll be the hard part I think  ;)

Glad to help. Just remember, if you're doing a 1.8 or 2.0 swap and want to use your existing tranny/t-case get the flywheel from the 1.8 or 2.0. The 1.6 flywheel will NOT bolt onto the crank. That is the difference. The 1.6 clutch assembly WILL bolt onto the 1.8 or 2.0 flywheel though since the clutch's are the same dimension wise.

Side note: this is why the Samurai swap is a little more difficult. Traditional swaps that use the kits available today to add the 1.6 8 or 16 valve engines into the Samurai use the Samurai transmission and flywheel/clutch assembly. The bolt pattern on that flywheel does not match the 1.8 / 2.0 So even though the adapter plate would work, the Samurai flywheel would need to be re-machined to adapt. That is why some early swap pioneers used the Sidekick 2wd transmission attached to the 1.8 or 2.0 engine and a shorten jack shaft to attach to the Samurai t-case. FWIW

Good luck, Eric

Hey Eric
     I gotta ask...
When I was test fitting the 2.0L to the 1.6 Track trans I have the 2.0L flywheel was too big diameter to fit inside the bellhousing so I had a custom flywheel made through a friend that is in essence a 1.6 flywheel with a 2.0L center. Same type of deal with the mounts, they were too wide and the 1.6 mounts did not mate up with the 2.0L
.
What have you found that I couldn't? Not disagreeing or trying to cause a problem....just same problem we are coming up with different answers...and I like your more than mine.

Zag

PS

Engine and flywheel I'm working is with is from a 2000 Tracker 5 speed.

Whawhawhawhat!?!?! The 2.0 really didn't fit to the 1.6 transmission? That blows me away! Seriously, I did make an assumption and received some information that appears to be wrong. What I based my assumption off of was that fact that I've bolted together the 1.8 engine straight to the 1.6 transmission with no issue and had been told that the 1.8 and 2.0 flywheels were similar, the bellhousings were the same, so that sounded right... I'm wondering if there is a 'wierd combo' that you stumbled accross but nonetheless, I stand corrected.

On the motor mounts did you try bolting the 1.6 mounts to the 2.0 engine and then bolting that into the Sidekick/Tracker? The 1.8 and 2.0 engine mounts are longer to attach to the wider frame of the Sport and Vitara (2nd Gen).

Thanks for the info.

Now you know why I'm asking....

Engine- 2000 Tracker 2.0 Manual w stock flywheel
Trans  - 1992 SideKick 1.6/8v

Flywheel was too large dia to fit inside bell, had to take it off.
Engine and trans bolted together fine

Had a flywheel made, Stock 1.6/16v clutch assembly....everything fits fine, testing it on the floor everything works fine.

Mounts would just not physically swap across...so I'm making some

Maybe the 1.8 flywheel is smaller, I know my interchange books show it as a different flywheel? But 1.8L stuff is extremely rare and I have not seen one that I could ply with.

Appreciate any additional info.

Is the 2.0 flywheel actually thicker with the same diameter? It doesn't make sense that the engine and tranny can bolt together but then there's rubbing with the flywheel installed. If the starter is in the same place, wouldn't that support only the same size (diameter) flywheel?
