Fuel Mileage:Does this sound correct?
« on: November 19, 2006, 06:21:11 AM »
OK, I have a 94 track 8 valve ,5 speed 2 door convert and I am only getting 12-13 miles per gallon.About 120-130 miles per tank. It has new O2 sensor, plugs, wires, coil, distributor, rotor, fuel filter, etc. It has 155,000 miles on it and runs great,Idles around 6-700 RPM. I recently fitted new 31's under it along with the lift, but i did not think my mileage would drop that much from 235's at 23 MPG to 12-13 with 31"s. Also one day it would not start at all and now it starts fine but I can hear a ticking sound coming from the top of the coil(that little black box). I think that is the igniter or spark control.
What do you guys think?

Here is a pic of the unit that is on top of the  coil

first off you will lose fuel milage with bigger tires and from the thread i would guess about 10-20% by the tires size change because your getting the wrong reading off the odometer. unless you re gear for the bigger tires.?so my advice is tire to add about 10-20% to your od # and see what your getting .

I'd replace that. It shouldn't be ticking, I suspect that it may be shorting out.

Ya I am going to replace it, I just can't figure out what is is, Checker auto says it is the ignition control module, but that is in the distributor.Friend of mine says it is the igniter, but autozone says they have no idea what it is or where they can find one.i guess I am kinda lost until I figure out what the heck it is.

i have a 92 tracker with 31x10.5 tires and i constantly get 22-25 mpg after i re-calculate. i get better mpg cruising on country roads than on the highway. ive found that my speedometer is off by 5-7 mph,and my odometer is off by 1/10 of a mile so it will read 9/10 when its actually 1mile. so figure at 200 miles its really 220. hope this helps.

Check your plugs for carbon.  Sure sign of running rich.
