Gen2 Tracker fuel consumption
« on: July 31, 2009, 09:53:21 PM »
In my old '96 2dr 5spd, I can coax about 28 to 29 MPG with the tires pumped up to 32psi.

I am considering a Gen2 Tracker (4cyl, automatic, 4WD), box stock, for a DD.  The EPA site shows the '96 at 24 and the '03 at 21.

I would appreciate some input as to the real world experience with this truck?  I have seen claims of 29-30 out of the Gen2.  Is this realistic?

Ive looked extensively into this and Ive found absolutely no claims of 28mpg+

Maybe if you used hypermiler techniques...

I had a SWB '96 5-speed.  Got 29-30 mpg regularly, 28 if I really abused it.  29" tires knocked it down to 27mpg tops, corrected.

Then got a 2003 SWB 5-speed new.  Best it got on stock tires was 27 mpg.  29" tires knocked it down to 24 tops, corrected.

Then I put the 2.7 V6 w/ autmatic in it.  21 mpg tops, usually 19-20 (although 85mph into a strong headwind netted me about 14..).  29" tires only seemed to knock 1-2 mpg off, corrected.

I believe anyone telling you 28-30mpg for the Gen II is on crack, although I can only speak for the 2.0, not the 1.6 (I think it was available in '99?).

Thank you, guys.  That's all I needed to know to convince me to buy a Pontiac Vibe for my DD (EPA 30-36).

Don't Worry, the "96 Tracker is still in the driveway.  I can't use it for work, because of my computer and other tools of the trade that can't be left for even a few minutes in a vehicle that zips instead of locks.  So, its been "retired to recreational use". (fun fun!!)

Don't do it.  Don't give in to the darkside (Toyota)!  I briefly owned 2 Gen 2 and they both got 25 mpg in my Chicagoland commute.  With the rear divider panel in place behind the seats you can relatively securely lock up computer stuff.

Its waaaaaay too late for that...  ...The black and red Vibe is replacing a boring beige Corolla (Prizm) that I have been driving for 4 years for work.  Got whacked from behind a couple weeks ago by a kid in a Mustang.

Would it help if I told you that the Vibe is a 5 spd (with cruise)?  It is getting a true 36MPG, which is about what I need to make out on the mileage allowance at work.

i consume 11-13 litres per 100km on mine with 4.5inches of lift and heavy ssr's..

That's what I get with my liftef 4door on heavy 31" to.

A friend with a soft top tracker and same setup manages to get 9,5 litres per 100km, I can barely get that on stock tires....
