CV Joints

I just installed a 2" coil lift on my 1989 Sidekick.  Went on a day long desert run yesterday.  After about 2 hours I started to hear a rubbing noise from the front that would only last 1 second or 2.  Only heard this noise about 5 times all day.  Had been driving all week in 2wd and no noise.  Now in 4wd is when the noise started.  I need to replace the boots but noticed the price for rebuilt shafts are not much more.  Plus I am afraid if I replace the boots, then the joints will go out.  But there is no play in the shafts.  So I am not sure what to do.  Any suggestions?  Thanks,  John

Well, for the price of a boot kit and all the work to remove the CV's I'd just go ahead and replace them. Try and get rebuilt STOCK ones, OEM originals. They seem to be the best. What makes you think it's the cv's making the noise anyway? They usually begin to " click" when going out. Thge rubbing may be something else entirely. Did you fit bigger tires?

I had a 3.5 inch lift in my tracker and never lost a CV but that doesnt mean yours havent gone out.  But you could look for tears in the boots sometimes rocks get in there or sand and cause some weird noises.   But I would think about (if you havent allready.) about picking up some CV used or new to have on hand.  Maybe before you go all out in replace them try to pin point the noise.
