OK I"M FRUSTRATED!!
« on: October 27, 2005, 09:28:10 PM »
I just put together a 16v in my 93 sidekick 4dr. The head was rebuilt it has a Hawk cam in it new plugs and wires new cap rotor, check the egr moves freely pit new gasket on it. Put new gaskets on the intake manifold. Sprayed carb cleaner around everything to check for vacuum leaks. This thing idles low and has a big flat spot when you take off. When you rev it while sitting still the idle comes down so far that it sometimes dies. I've also rechecked the timing. The haynes manual shows number one in a different spot than mine is in. I also have been reading the forums for the past two days looking for ideas. ANY OTHER IDEAS Thanks..

Too much cam advance and it's 180* out on the ignition

My guess is you installed the cam (mark on pulley) pointing
up as well as the mark on the crank pointing up.

This is not the correct assembly for the firing #1 in the
shown position, and I think the cam is a tooth or 2 off

ya my book is wrong on the firing order also, you have to short out the plug by the battery befor timing it.read your book for that and yes my book was wrong on that also!

Yes this is how I set the timeing marks. I also noticed there is two different marks on the cam pulley. which notch is right?? Is there a better book that shows how to set the timing marks or any pics Thanks

The notch on the pulley should be inline with the pin
on the end of the cam, opposite side of the pin.

Cam pin points up, notch on pulley points down,
dizzy points on an 8V sort of towards the oil filler
on the 16V the dizzy it's self points the other direction
as the 8V does.

There is usually a mark on the base of the dizzy that is
the correct position for the rotor in the #1 firing position

What you have is fine for the ignition timing, but the cam
sounds like it is retarded or advanced too much, causing
sluggish peformance.

advance on a cam generaly gives low RPM increase, retard
gives high RPM increase, oor rather it mover the power of
the cam up or down the RPM range.

Cam timing is opposite affect as ignition timing, where more
advance gives high RPM performance.

I'm affraid you have to remove the front cover to check the
cam timing, could be worse, but a tooth or 2 is all that is needed
to play havoc with the power band

I left the cover off this time so if I needed to change anything I wouldn't have to pull it all apart again. Thanks
