how much power can a 8v take?
« on: December 14, 2003, 11:59:40 AM »
I desperately need more go go in my ride.  In 4 low, sitting in a big puddle of brown I can barely get the big wheels to spin.  I could turbo it or get a whole new 22re toyota drivetrain, but I would rather turbo it.  Anybody run anything other than a suzi 1.6 engine?
To whoever had the turbo kick, did you get a custom chip or just recalibrate yours?

why not just do all the bolt ons before goin turbo,  try header, cam, full exhaust, K&N, Adjustable cam pulley and underdrive pulley.  that will probley wake up your tracker more than you think.  thats what i'm doing after i sell my Eclipse.  lata stu

Turbo is a lot of work, fun tho.
I had my Kick apart for 6 Months
while I did a rebuild and added the
Turbo, mostly money was the holdup.

I boosted the fuel PSI, but that is only
good for 3-4 PSI boost. I'm working on
a custom EFI computer with MPI injectors.
My blasted work schedule sucks, fact is I'm
quiting tomorrow, two weeks notice, and going
to go to another CO. better pay and Hrs.  Then
I might have time to work on the MPI manifold
and get it up to 8 PSI boost, good for about 150
to 160 HP, and a healthy torque boost too.

Personal oppinion Get gears, I still want them
when I have the 33s on, no sub for gears, not
even a turbo.

Hope this helps,
Darrin

thanks for the info, but how much boost I can have is directly proportional to how much the bottom end can take.   I have a friend named mark who runs 33s on his purple tracker who has gone through 4 engines last year.   I dont know what all went wrong but I'm wondering if the bottom end is capable of taking that much more hp, I never had one apart to have a look at one.

Well I only got 250,000 miles out of the last engine,
:P I would say the problem with your friends Kick is
driving habits and motor oil selection/change frequentcy

And could be gears, 33s work an engine hard, lugging
a 4 banger is a no-no. I run 30s on the street now, just
changed out a set of bald 31s for winter driving.

I'll go to 33s on the street when I change R&P to 5.83s

So nobody ever did an engine/drivetrain swap to get some more squirrel power? I thought the 22re Toyota would have been quite a good replacement.

4 engines!!! Dude has got to be doing something way wrong! Im constantly on the rev limiter and have yet to blow a zuk engine. However I do try to have the engine warmed up before I pound it and I also try to keep a load on it as Im bouncing off the rev limiter.

Id say a set of t case gears is what you really need.

I thought about the 4.3, but that would make the truck a lot heavier, thus giving up some of the advantage of the tractor.  I would seriously prefer a big 4 like toyota or nissan, or a small 6, but I dont know how long the drive train is.

I don't recall anyone wrecking an 8V engine, the 16V is notorious for cracked heads and one of our guys had a block crack. Otherwise they seem pretty bullet proof at least in stock form. I'd agree with Wildgoody though get the gearing sorted first. You have to work the engine a lot harder with 33s and stock gearing to get the same torque at the wheels. Its also pretty rough on the clutch too.

i just spent 1800 on a 1.3 bored .020 over low compression pistions, all new rings and seals, bearings, oil and water pump, timing belt and tensioner, brand new cam custom built for the turbo, has a k03 turbo with steel braided oil and water lines, blow off valve, inter cooler with all piping, custom made manifold, k&n filter, running off a weber 32/36 carb. everything is new and the entire thing has 00 hours of run time. what kind of boost should i run and what kind of hp should i expect out of this setup?

So nobody ever did an engine/drivetrain swap to get some more squirrel power? I thought the 22re Toyota would have been quite a good replacement.

I dropped a Suzuki 2.7L V6 w/5 speed automatic in my 93 Tracker, that gives me 185 hp.  It is a tight squeeze, and I spent many days/weeks going over the wiring diagrams, not counting the days of wiring changes.  I will have spent close to zuksbiggestfan  $1800 with my swap, the last group of modifications (that I am still working on) including my 1 1/2" DOM sport/roll cage.
We also put a 2.0L out of an Aerio into Drone637's Project Trouble Race Car, it puts out 155 hp.  After modifying the motor (changing oil pan, pump, cooling water outlet, ect.) it is an almost bolt in change with major wiring adaptions required.  This motor is same physical size as the 1.6L, so is an easier motor swap.
93 Tracker,XL7 springs & 1" raised spring pads in front with YJ springs in back, home built bumpers rear & front (w/winch), 2" x 4" rock tubes,  ARB front & rear, converted Sami rear to IFS, 33x12.5x15  aluminum rims, roll cage, 2.7L w/5 speed auto.
