If you hear a "pop," I would suspect a hard short to ground.  If you measured the resistance to ground at the circuit side of the fuse, you will probably read less than 1 ohm.  I would look for a pinched wire.

Disconnect the coil and see if it still does it. That should tell you if its the coil or the wiring.
