Can't get the tranny out!!!
« on: March 31, 2006, 01:50:21 PM »
So my last post was about my clutch issue, and I came to the conclusion I need a new clutch.  I got the kick on jackstands and the crossmember off, starter bolts out, and all the motor->tranny bolts/nuts off.  I think I got them all anyway.  The tranny is supported with a jack and I was under the truck sitting up with my head in the tranny/drivshaft tunnel yanking on it trying to get it to come off teh back of the motor.  No can do.  Wiggled side to side, tried jacking it up further, letting it down further, nothing seems to help.  It moved some, there is about  a .5-.75" gap between the motor and the tranny, but it won't come any further.  Got the little wiring harness plug loose too.  Any insight here?  Did I miss something somewhere guys?  Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Bryan

There MAY be a set of brackets on either side of the engine down low that also attach to the transmission.  I only have TracKick Automatics and both of them have these brackets so I don't know for sure if the 5-speeds have the same brackets.  They are not very obvious. :(

If you have all the bellhousing stuff off, it should slide right out.

I'm pretty sure I got those too.  I definitely remember one on the pass side, it had 2 bolts into the tranny, they're both out.  Don't really remember on the drivers side.  Like I said though, there's a good .5-.75" gap between the 2 now, and it still won't come out.  A friend of mine mentioned something about some Toyotas were reverse something or another and you had to take the clutch fork loose or something, I dunno, I didn't really grasp what he meant, and it was relayed through my dad, and we all know what happens when info is relayed through someone else, lol. ::)

It sounds like maybe the pilot bearing is stuck on the end of the output shaft which will hang up on the pressure plate
if you have looked every where and it sounds like you have then thats most likely what it is
try using a comealong  to pull it out but use it lightly.

PS stupid question you took out the shifter
OOps, owell thats just the fender

Yeah, both shifters are out, as well as both driveshafts...

Yup, i think it is the dust cover. there is a little bolt (be carfull or you will strip it,i think it is 8mm) i was hung up for like 15 minutes and finally looked in the little crack and walla. it came right out. be sure the rear of the motor is supported. you dont want to stress any mounts when the tranny falls in your lap.

Sounds like the problem....If not make sure the studs are not binding up,Mine had two studs and it was a pain...I just removed the jack and manhandled mine out...LOL Shook it till it fell out!!!!LOL But I had a buddy helping...Also I found it easier to remove the flywheel to replace the pilot bearing.Just knocked it out and installed the new one...The flywheel has the same size hole all the way threw...

Do you have your dust cover all the way off?

Anyone care to elaborate on this dust cover?  Dumb Question of the day-  What's the dust cover?  Is that the thin piece of metal between the motor/tranny.  Does it have it's own bolts that hold it in...say the 8mm bolt zoomzoom mentioned?  I dunno what to do.  This sounds like the problem though, if a few people have had this issue before.  How many bolts are in the dust cover?  Any idea where they are, I obviously missed them, lol.

Thanks guys!

There are two small bolts that hold it to the tranny...Mine took a 10 mm wrench to get them off. They are on the motor side of tranny.

its the cover on the bottom of the bellhousing keeping rocks and little things out of where your clutch is. its about 3-4 inches tall and about 10 inches wide. there are a few little bolts holding it on there and if you miss one, it will bend the plate a bit but not let the tranny out. good luck with it,
