Insurance woes
« on: July 16, 2004, 04:56:49 PM »
I've owned this rig for a bit over 8 years... so I've sorta gottin' used to payin' the insurance bills.  :P I still don't understand why they are so high.

OK... a 10 year old car that cost $6K w/ 19K miles. I'd been driving an '89 Hyundai  :o and those bills were high, considering. (Earlier Hyudais were the most commonly stolen autos... they fixed that in '89 by actually having a couple dozen keys to fit all... a high tech solution.)

I had been with State Farm a *long* time (all the discounts)... but when they told me it would be $1700 a year to insure, I choked. Their explanation was that these cars rolled over. I might accept that if it were a Sammy (I sold my pair when the article came out & insurance climbed) but the Kick is as stable as any 4WD... and being 2WD, I thought more stable. Even a decade after it came out, the insurance is $690 a year. (New insurance company. I've paid as much in insurance than the car cost me.)

Any ideas? Could it be that more 'Zukis are 4 wheeled than other vehicles? Could 'Zuki have been "cursed" by the Sammy reviews? (I know that review hurt Zuki purchases across the board... thus the 10 year lawsuit.)

I'd be interested in what ya'll pay. Mine is with all discounts, low mileage, long term relationship, house insured, etc, but does have full coverage and a low deductable ($60) when a top is slashed. *That* last fee has cost me slightly more than the cost of new tops, but has also caused me to put in claims when I would not otherwise. (2 radios and some trim replaced. Vandalism doesn't count towards higher premiums.)

When I first priced insurance, I could have been driving a (then) $30K 4WD PU for lower insurance costs.

I was quoted $400/ year to add a '88.5 sammy to my policy along with a 2000 S-10 ZR2 and a 2001 Blazer ZR2.

I pay 500 bucks a year with multi car and house discount for Minumum Liablity. Otherwise they wanted over 1000 bucks ayear for full coverage which is what I'd like to have :-/.  They say cause it as A high roll-over problem, I don't see how, I haven't mine rolled it yet ;D  So I always lock it in the garage when not being driven ;D
By the way its Farmers Ins.

I pay about $800 or $900 a year for liability. It makes me mad knowing that I'll probably never need it, but I'm required to have it by law here >:(

I pay about $600 a year for the tracker.  What makes me mad is that it is my 4th car and it is almost as expensive as the newer cars.

i have another one for you to ponder on.

I have three trucks on my insurance, a 91 sammy, a 90 tracker , and a 96 nissan hardbody 2wd. All have liability and the tracker cost me the same as the nissan and the samurai together.  I would think the tracker would be cheaper than the samurai but it is not.

Okay. In case nobody figured it out by now ;D

Insurance is a Govt backed scam.
You must pay what they want for the freedom of driving. If you use Your Insurance, they jack it up or cancel it.
If you got kids- it goes up
If you got tickets- it goes up
If you have bad credit-it goes up
If Big Brother doesn't like what you drive- It goes up

In fact, They used to give discounts if you drove a full size SUV cause it cost less to fix in an accident.
Now they charge them more cause they (SUV) causes more damages in accidents ??? WTF.

But thats just my conspiracy theory ;D

Yep... insurance is required in most states. I've been working on my credit rating... which may explain why my insurance rates have dropped.

That is one that puzzles me... insurance rates based on credit score. (All companies apparently do this.) I suppose those with little invested in the system might be more inclined to fake accidents... but it goes right to the top. (Myself, I was scammed by an ex-fiance who was just trying to do the best for herself... but it messed up my credit for all these years.)

Accident scores are kept by a different agency. I'm not sure why the rate the Kick as being a greater risk than the Sammy. Granted, as the car has gotten older, more people 4WD these rigs... but how many of them carry full insurance?

Thanks to those who have mentioned cheaper insurance rates... I'll check out those companies. (It's rather a pain that I can insure my Beetle for so little, while this car... far less likely to get into an accident... costs so much.)

I pay around $1000/year for full coverage on both the X-90 and the Kick. I droped state Farm like a bad habbit after Years of having my insurance through them. Every year they would go up and have some lame ass excuse why. I have good credit, 0 points on my record, all the discounts (mulit car, long term client, good driver, etc...) and they still went up >:( On auto and renters insurance >:( After my last major hike in prices I told my agent that I was going shoping for other companies prices and asked if he could do something about the rediculous price hike. He said that that all of their insurance prices were rising nation wide  to try and get some of the money back they lost on 9-11-01. That was enough for me to hear, and I droped them and went to Farm Bureau. Alot cheaper, better service and so foar no price hikes for being a good customer.

The Tracker/Kicks are probably higher on insurance because it is a vehicle that mainly younger drivers own, resulting in a higher % accident claims than on the other 4x4 vehicles.

As for the price hikes, some of them are complete Bull Shit but not a Government Scam.

1- Young age or Kids in the house, no matter what their record is like or how godd of dirvers, you price still goes up because younger drivers are more likely (in general) to have an accident

2- The ticket thing should be self explainatory. If your geting tickets, your breaking the law, speeding, lane changes, whatever, and this hike actually makes since.

3- The "bad credit" price hike came after a long study was done on people nation wide that made claims for accidents. After something like a 3 year study of thousands of accident claims, like 75% of the people who made accident claims of any kind had bad credit scores. :-/  I'll try and find the exact numbers but it was something crazy like that. I still think that it is a bull shit price hike like the age thing,.  Make your driving record and accident record determie what your rate will be.

That $1700 a year seems insane unless you have a terrible driving record. Definately check around with other companies. State Farm will hike your prices to insane levels for no reason, if you get a single ticket they are even worse.

This one I have never thought made sense.  Just because you drive fast doesn't mean you are going to have more accidents!

Insurance is a game in itself. It's a business and things with cost will cost more.

Yea the multi car thing sucks. This time last year I was insuring: 89 Kick,  95 Escort, 2000 Yamaha V-Max, and a 2001 Yamaha Wolverine (sp?). I explained to my insurance agent that I drove the Escort 1000 miles a week, but the others mainly sat there and occasionally was driven on the weekends. According to him, that did not matter and there was no breaks for LOW Mileage use >:( The pisser of it all was that he was charging me MORE for the high mileage I was putting on the Escort and the same high mileage price was applied to the vehicles I rarely used >:(

Insurance is just like TAXES. If your a responcible driver and obey the laws governing insurance you get to pay for all the uninsured people that cause wrecks and all dumb shit other people do >:( With taxes, the harder you work and the more you make, the more gets STOLEN from you to support the part of the community that feels that we own them something, so they dont work and live off taxes >:(

Got my bill in today for our insurance.  03 Mazda MPV and 96 Track with 102,XXX miles = $481 per 6 months.  I too moved after a long term "relationship" with State Farm.  I just got tired of the seemingly high rates.  So far I am very impressed with Farm Bureau.  Cut my rate over $100/6 months on our vehicles.
J
Edit: the tracker's portion is less than $200/6 months for liability only.
