Speedo Help
« on: August 20, 2009, 07:51:26 PM »
So this is the second time this has happened to me. My speedo is making grinding noises, and thats a bad sign. The last time it did this It ended up breaking a few weeks later. Lucky for me that time I had a parts truck with a good cluster, just swapped it out and back on the road. Not so lucky this time.

Im thinkin this time i might put together a custom gauge cluster. Ive been looking around at some gauges, and obviously the electronic stuff has more options and better prices. But since Trackicks have a cable, this puts me in a spot. I dont even know if an aftermarket one will fit using the stock cable. So I got to thinkin.

Now what I thought was interesting about this one was that it says; "Vehicles with mechanical speedometer cable must have it replaced with electronic speed sender." So that got me thinkin, is there an electronic speed sender that will work in my 96 5speed? Would it be possible to get one from maybe a later Tracker/ Vitara or XL7 or maybe even something else? Just a thought, maybe not even a good one, i dunno.
So has anybody put in an aftermarket speedo? Any Ideas/ suggestions?

The vitara has an electronic sending unit, and there is a box from Australia that will allow you to tune the electronic signal to true the speedo for tire size changes.
I have been working on installing an electronic speedo into my 93 tracker guage cluster when I do my upgrade.  I have not found out which wires go to the contact points on the speedo yet.  I had to switch the speedo and tach positions, and have the tach wiring figured out, but still stumped on the speedo.
It still needs cleaned up a little, but this is the first try.
93 Tracker,XL7 springs & 1" raised spring pads in front with YJ springs in back, home built bumpers rear & front (w/winch), 2" x 4" rock tubes,  ARB front & rear, converted Sami rear to IFS, 33x12.5x15  aluminum rims, roll cage, 2.7L w/5 speed auto.

Will the Vitara speed sender fit in a 1st gen tracker?
Cuz if it will bolt on that might just be easier than trying to get an aftermarket gauge and then make it work with the stock cable. And the tuner box would be nice for different size tire and drivetrain changes. Where can you get one from?
