I'm getting a noise after putting it into 4x4. Its a 90 and has locking hubs auto tranny. I'm guessing the 4x4 not locking properly cause its come from the left front. I actually just took the hub off the greese looks little dirty just wondering whats the best way to clean it? Parts washer?

Ok cleaned the hub out, greesed it up.....still making noise didn't make it at first had to drive then cam off and on off and on then stayed on? What could it be?

What kind of noise? Could be a bad wheel bearing or cv joints or a lot of things beside the hub.  Try taking the hubs off altogether and drive and see if it still makes the noise.  (It won't hurt anything they just won't engage the wheels to the axle shafts if they're not bolted on).

its a rubbing noise, I did a search and someone else seem to have the same problem, its cold here and it only happens in 4x4 goes aways after I take it out, its in the hubs I know that, CV, bearings, rotors all good. I cleaned out the auto hub and greased it but no change. Could it be jsut cause its warn? Sort of need to get this fix cause it keeps snowing and 2x4 sucks

 You might want to check the u-joints, you say that it has a rubbing noise. Also, how much play do the wheelbearings and or ball joints have? It might make a difference with load on the cv axle and could cause noise. Also, are they automatic hubs, or manual hubs? If they are autos, take them off, and THROW THEM AS FAR AS YOU CAN!! Put manual hubs on the truck and the front diff will thank you.

Ya everythings fine with the truck just the autohubs are acting up. I migth put manual hubs on if no one knows how to fix it.

are you sure it's not the cv shaft?  They dont turn untill the hub is locked.  Also, my front end makes a bit of whining sound if driving at high speed with the hubs locked. It's probably just because there is water in my differential.

Ya 100% not a CV its not clicking at all and its more of a rubbing sound...kinda hard to type it but its sort of like a werid horn noise in a waylike somethings jamming is what it sounds like. I'm guessing its just the spring in the hub being a pain and I'm sure the only way to get rid of it is replace it. I have found that if I back up then go forward it goes away for a bit. I was hoping this re greasing would solve it but guess not. I"m going to check out wreckers for manual and auto hubs and I'll put on whatever I get the best deal on. Manual seems like the way to go.

As far as I know, nothing can be done about that noise.  It's just the ultra cold weather that causes it.  I have manual hubs and they've been doing that for years.
