My X-90.....work in progress
« on: September 30, 2015, 07:29:23 PM »
I just wanted to get some opinions, and maybe some advice, on my X-90. It obviously is not finished yet. I still need to make (and mold in) some fender flares/lips, add offroad lighting, a winch, and paint it. It has a stock engine, and drivetrain, and is running a 2" aluminum spacer suspension lift, with 35/12.50/R17 tires. I have done some offroading with it, and yes, the tires actually clear, and do not rub. It also has full turning capability. I managed to accomplished this with a plasma cutter, big hammer, and a welder. It is need of some taller gears. It currently has the stock ring and pinions (4.625 ratio), and I am looking for something around 5.7-6.5 for it, as it accelerates pretty slowly. I also could use some pointers on what air pressure to run in the tires. They are at 32psi in the pictures, and I have even aired them down to 15psi, and still have not managed to get the majority of the tread to actually make contact with the road surface. Any help or suggestions would greatly be appreciated.

Sweet.  What did you do to fit 35's so good?  I can imagine how lethargic it must bee with 4.625's.
Skyhiranger (on this board) has had a good assortment of gears (he had some 5.62's last time he advertised), but not sure if he is still active here.  Send him a PM and he may be able to help.  There are some higher gears out there from Turkey/Austria, and someone may have more information.  The higher ratio's you go the smaller the pinion gear gets, and weaker teeth.  With 35's you may have problems keeping teeth in place.
You did a nice job on the trimming for those tires.  More photo's would be better.
What area are you in, some may want to do some wheeling with you.

Hi, after reading your response, I decided to update my original posting, as I realized there were not enough pictures, or information in it. I will PM Skyhiranger, to see if maybe he can help me further, and thank you, I appreciate the information. Yes, lethargic is a very good word to describe it's performance. Sometimes I feel like a three legged turtle could blow right by me!  Once up to speed however, it does just fine. As far as the gears go, I always thought that the ring gear would actually bigger in diameter on a taller gear, (assuming the pinion still had the same amount of teeth). The bigger gear would turn slower, causing a reduction in speed, and an increase in torque. Heck, I don't know any more, it has been a long time since I went to automotive school, plus, I'm getting old...50 now. I have called Calmini, and they could not help me, nor were they able to point me in the right direction....so, dead end there.  Believe it or not, I actually picked up the X-90 for $450.00, just like it is now, minus the "big stereo, and big tires". As far as "Wheeling" with me, that sounds great, except, I see you are in Washington, and I am located in central Florida. We could not be geographicly too much further apart, so that is a bummer.

You could pull a set of gears off a Geo Tracker/Suzuki Sidekick.  That would drop you to 5.12 and help a little.  Get one that is a 96-98 and it would be a straight swap.

That looks almost like a photoshop, looks good.  :D

Thank you. I actually might consider the 5.12 gears, that will bring it up about 600 rpm's at 45 mph, so that would help a bit. I've heard the "Photoshop" comment alot...lol, but indeed it does look just like that in real life, besides, if I was going to do that, I would atleast make it so that it was all one color, and remove the dents. Well, thanks again, for the info on the gearing.

What did you do to fit the 35"?  I moved my ball joint forward 1 1/2" & out 3/4" and of course the fender trimming  to fit 33's, but do not have enough room for 35"s.  Are you running a Body Lift.

Florida is a looong way, but I was down there in 2013 at Mud Muckers.  It was very different from the wheeling up here.
