First Sammy 88' TinTop (56k Warning)
« on: August 11, 2009, 03:41:52 PM »
Hi everybody. I just bought my first Suzuki Samurai. I took a bunch of pics for all to enjoy.
It's a 1988 with roughly 40,000km reading on the gauge. Picked it up for $650 as-is where-is. Body is a bit rough on it but the frame still seems to be solid. The owner and myself brought a vehicle to it and a set of booster cables, hooked er' up and after a few seconds of cranking *bang* away she went, 2 year old gas and all. After he left I pulled a mouse nest out of the air cleaner and removed a bunch of wasps that had made a nest on the top of the back door. It hasn't run in at least 2 years and the last time the plates were renewed was 1999, if it has been sitting for 10 years I'm surprised at the shape it's in, all in all it's not too bad. 8)

Status check:
Oil - Clean and full
Coolant - Clean and full
Brakes - Master cylinder empty, no feel in the pedal at all. (Suspect wheel cylinders, as what I can see of the brake lines look good.)
E-Brake - Completely seized on.
Clutch - Unknown.

My boss is going to swing by tomorrow with a flatbed tow truck and take it to the garage where I work. Ill put it up on the hoist after work and take a few more pictures tomorrow of the undercarriage and whatever I find wrong.

List of repairs needed:
Front Pads and Rotors
Rear Drums and Shoes (guessing)
Rear Wheel Cylinders and Brake Spring Kit (guessing)

Plan: Get it roadworthy again (Safety and Emissions Test). Winter driver, little to no modifications.

If anyone has any suggestions as to anything I should be looking for or checking, I am more than willing to accept.

Nice find.

Highly recommend draining/cleaning the tank.
Takes about ten mins. to remove.

Good luck.

To replace that rusted rocker a piece of angle iron works great.  Nice find though, Tin Tops are always a bit of a rarity.

I have decided not to do anything with the Suzuki. The project is simply going to cost more money than I can afford. The insurance alone is going to cost me $2400yr + $412 upfront just because its older than 20 years, my current insurance company wont even touch it because they consider it a 'high risk' vehicle, they figure it will break down every 10 yards....

Until I can scrape together some money, a better investment would be a set of steel rims and winter tires for my current car.

- Until the next Sammy

That's a shame.  My insurance is exactly the opposite, they won't insure it for any real money because it is an old car and not worth anything...

Well, I hope the next one works out!
