New Project...need opinions
« on: June 01, 2005, 11:53:47 AM »
Hi all. Not only am I new to this forum, but I'm new to Zuks. I've been wanting to build a Samurai for a while and finally found one that is worthy (no rust). I have built a couple of Jeeps, but never a Sami. I have researched a lot of products and need some opinions. This vehicle will be used 90% on road, so I'm trying to build one that looks really cool, but will perform if asked. I want to run 33's. How much and which type of lift should I use?? I'd like to gear it using the T-case only, so which reduction set should I get?? Keep in mind that I'm most concerned about getting up to speed on the road. Thanks in advance for any help. Cost is not a huge concern, I just want it to do what I need.
Mike

Lift it using  a Trail tough YJ kit, run there Gear case gears and you should be good. I would recommend at least a 4:89 t-case gear set for the 33" with stock R/P. Although I would prefer to say even out your torque and accomidate both numericaly Higher R/P and a case gear. ( aleaviates stress) also if you are going to stay with Stock axles install some birf rings. Or you will break the Birfs under a 33 and a skiny pedal

I'll second that ... the YJ kit is a nice lift and the 4.89 is the tcase reduction you'll need. I also agree that getting the R/P ratio better is worthy (especially if you wanna add lockers as well).
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy it.

I'd do jus' like they said - YJ's w/ a 4 1/2" SPOA. Especially with mostly road driving, go with 5.13 or 4.62's to lower the driveline stress. (The TracKick front 3rd's will work in the Sami axles) Then you can get T/C gears if you decide you'll need 'em. And Birfield rings to manage the stress of the 33's. Have fun!  ;D
And welcome!

you actualy only need the complete 3rd members and then you order a hybrid housing for therear and you use the entire 3rd member. on the front you take the gears out of the sidekick 3rd member housing and put them in the sammi 3rd member housing my sugestion would be 4.63 gears instead of the 5.12. the 5.12 's crawl real good but makes it a little to much gear for the street.

You'll be fine with just the transfer case gears.

If you add gear reduction in both your transfer case and your third members, you'll be revving pretty high for 90% on road driving.

(voice of experience here, great around town but on the hiway at 4000 RPM with my whiny transmission I'm deaf by the time I get to the trail head )
