Not running right
« on: May 19, 2004, 12:10:51 AM »
I have a 90 Sidekick that is not running right. It seems to
spit and sputter until you hit a certain RPM or position on the throttle, then it runs like a scalded dog. I dont have a code checker but the check engine light blinks
twice then pause then twice again then longer pause.
It has been tuned up with NGK plugs, wires, cap and rotor, timing belt, water pump, pcv valve. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I dont know what the codes mean , but My 16V had symptoms like that before my plug wire went out, then it just ran like hell all of the time. Switched the wires out for new one and 3 months later the same thing happned >:( Luckily they warrantied the wires and gave me some new ones. Do you have any wires you can temproarly switch out and see if that is the problem?

do a compression test, could be a low cylinder, if not then check your timing

I had the same prob at one point with my 16v zuk, and it turned out to be severely dirty fuel injectors, got them cleaned and the problem dissapeared.

So, it's flashing a 22.

No idea what that is, but I can look it up at home tonight.  Mine flashes a 51 - EGR.  But there's nothing wrong with the EGR - the problem has come and gone since I got the vehicle.  So, I just ignore the Check Engine light.

According to my Haynes manual, a code 22 is TPS.

It recommends checking the TPS connector at the ECM.

It also says that the TPS will go into a "default" mode if it senses a problem.  I don't know for sure how our ECMs work, but I know I've heard that for others, you can disconnect the battery for a while and it will reset the ECM and other electronics.

There is a testing procedure listed; let me know if you need that.
