Junked R&P 5.83's - Topic changed to 5.62's
« on: May 03, 2006, 07:36:11 AM »
I'm a junkyard scavenger - budget man - three kids under three and a new addiction with this track/kick and zukiworld website I got into.  But since I have to keep it under control and spend as little as possible - I have a couple of questions.

1.  Is there any vehicle that I could look for and rip apart in a junkyard for 5.83 R&P gears.. Or a rear third that will fit up to a 96'?
2.  How hard is it to install this into the Track/Kick?
3.  If you have 5.83 rears, do you need 5.83 for the front too?

I'm not afraid to work on this kind of thing, and have a good mechanical aptitude, Just not familiar with this yet.

I'm trying to treat my ignorance here.  I don't know if this needs to be put into 3 different posts, let me know and I can split em up.

Thanks for the help

Hi!

Unfortunately, unless any of those vehicles in the junkyard were modified with aftermarket gears from Calmini, they won't have 5.83's. Most stock Track/Kicks came with 4.62's and 5.12's. There was that ONE though in 1989 where there was ONE model with the 1.3L engine. It came with 5.62's. Some CA models have 4.30's.

But, 90% of your Track/Kicks work like this:

Manual = 5.12's.
Auto 3 Speed = 4.62's
Auto 4 Speed (O/D) = 5.12's.

As for thirds out of other .. "vehicles" I know of none that will fit into the rear of a Track/Kick.

You will need the same gear ratio for the front AND the rear. Basically, if you don't, and you put it into 4WD (engaging the front) one set might spin faster than the other (or try to) and will damage your transfer case. You've opened up a watch, or a clock, haven't you? Think of the gear ratios as different size/teeth on the gears. A smaller set might spin faster and a bigger set might spin slower. (Just trying to create a visual for you.)

As for difficulty installing, put aside a day or a weekend for it if you aren't familiar with how to remove and reinstall differentials. It's very straighforward. We're all here to help you if you have trouble! Google installing third members, r & r differentials, etc, the kicks work pretty much the same way as any other non full floating axle.

And DON'T be afraid to work on these things! They are amazingly easy to work on, and are a GREAT mechanical learning tool!

another option is to find a 1991 4 door with the 8 valve engine. It will have 5.38:1 gears!! Hard to find as well.

Google installing third members, r & r differentials, etc

and don't forget to use the search facility on this forum, there is a wealth of information here. The rear third can be a pain to remove, often a jack under the third will break it free.

Thanks guys... now is there a zukiholic meeting I can attend?

Will the 89 1.3L fit up with the 96'??  Also are the 5.62's on a 89 for an auto or 5spd or both? Is this a bolt on swap, or will I need to rebuild the diffs?

If I found these what do I need to look for as far as condition and quality in a junkyard part and how much could I sell the 5.12's for??

Ton of questions... I appreciate it..

I'll check the archives for repair and rebuild..

I bought a Tracker with 5.62's in it, about 2000 miles from here.. another member on here went a few hundred miles to get it, and pull the 5.62's out and send them to me, in return he kept the carcass.  Cost me $600, then I sold the 5.12's (with a locker though) for $350.. I would think you could get 200-300 for your gears. BUT,  I seriously doubt you will find 5.62's...   Good luck.. this gear problem should be figured out.  Axle swaps seem to be easier... the 9 inch is a GREAT piece... and gearing is available for whatever you want.

Junkyard gearing isn't much of an option for Track-Kicks with 5.12's already...... sadly....

I've already located a couple sets of 5.62's out of a 89 1.3L... I just want to make sure I know what I'm getting into before I take off the 5.12's.  I want to know these things will work and are in good shape.  Quaddawg.. Did you have some pics of the 5.62's?  I'll do some more looking around on this site for instruction before I ask too many more questions.

I don't remember if I took any pics of the 5.62's..

You have located a COUPLE OF SETS??

How much? I am sure the folks around here would like to get some.

course they fit, you will need the carriers, and you will have to give up ABS in the rear, if you have it (which you do, I am sure)

Check Ack's Faqs  there are a couple of good articles there on diff work.  I even have a chumpy little article there on retaining backlash.

make sure they are 5.62's and not just '89's they made '89's with 5.12's (5 spds, 1.6L) and 4.62's (auto, 1.6L) the 1.3L '89 is quite rare if you located a couple then I suspect one of them is not 5.62's

If the engine is torn out of this thing, What is the best way to tell if it's a 1.3L?  I can search for the VIN#'s for that year... How about the difference between 5.12's & 5.62's.  I noticed the ring on the 5.62's is thicker.  Does anyone have dimensions?

yah, the ring has to be thicker, and the pinion smaller, or they wouldn't fit the housing/carrier

The BEST way is make sure is to mark the ring gear, and pinion, and rotate the pinon while counting turns, the 5.12 will take  5.12 turns, or a little bit more than 5 turns, to turn the ring gear ONCE.

The 5.62's will be a little more than 5 and a HALF turns to get the ring around once.

That is if the third member is out and you can do that and see the ring

If the unit is still in the vehicle. Jack up ONE side of the rear end. Mark the pinion, or driveshaft, mark a tire (or brake drum ) and turn the pinion or drive shaft enough to spin a tire TWICE (to make up for the differential and spider gears)

The 5.62's are indeed rare. Your first clue is too look for a carburetor, unless it has a carburetor, you are probably out of luck.

The 1.3 looks very similar to an 8 valve 1.6.  Check the gears, no matter what. Count em.. only way to know for SURE what you have.
