Pumping gas pedal when starting samurai necessary?
« on: March 17, 2004, 08:07:02 AM »
Pumping gas pedal when starting samurai necessary?!? where's the beef?!?

ok people heres the beef, got my girlfriend a tintop samurai and in the morning its hard to start, first i was using not many pumps of the pedal but found out after time that i NEED to pump it vigorously to get it started every time it has been sitting for more than a day.

anyone know why it seems to be lean on fuel? float set too low or something? thanks in advance, 6feetofAIR

I've got a 87 hardtop that i bought a month ago.  I have to pump it quite a bit too.  I checked the carb and there is no choke plate.  I haven't been able to find one for it yet.  I think that will help me out alot.

The only time I had to pump my 89, (the gas pedal) was when the air cleaner came loose and the rubber gasket somehow became lodged in the choke.

I never have to pump the gas, Now it did take a few extra cranks of the starter when I first got it. But a tune up and new fuel filter along with all new vac. hoses It starts on the first roll of the engine.

A proper choke setting would help (if there is one)-->sami88  ;D

Oh, and  correct timing goes a long way

hey thanks for the replys. my samurai seems to do it just a little but the new one takes forever to start. new plugs wires cap rotor and correct timing are excellent ideas, although i havent done this yet(other than checking the cap and rotor just in case it looked bad) the thing is so hard to start it makes me believe that it has something to do with the carb. discuss and thanks in advance, 6feet 8)

Hey, I remember those carbeurator thingies!  I had one back in the 80's!

Fuel filter could be a big issue, and fuel pump might be getting weak.

It's a carb'ed vehicle... what do you expect?

I used to have to pump mine anytime... adjusted the carb and now I only have to do it when it's cold, but hell - I love in FL.
