Sami 1.3 (petroworks) Reset Valves

Sami 1.3 (petroworks) Reset Valves

 ??? Greetings,

I have about 2500 miles on a rebuilt longblock from Petroworks and am getting a ticking.  Someone mentioned after the normal breakin period of a newly rebuilt engine you should reset the valves.

Is this true and how/where would I find out how to do this job.

If somebody else did the replacement for you it may be a warranty issue, so they may want to do it. Setting the valve lash involves removing the cam cover and using a set of feeler gauges to see how much slack is in each valve's mechanism and compare with manufacturer's specs. Adjustment is with a wrench and screwdriver. It's easy, especially with the engine cold.

A little valve noise is okay. On an engine that doesn't have hydraulic tappets, you want the valves a little loose, not tight, to avoid burned valves.

Don speaks the truth, you'll have some valvetrain noise due to design, but I'd also say that at 2500 you should be doing your second oil change and should be adjusting the valves on a fresh motor. After that I adjust valves every 3 oil changes or 9,000 mi. They're usually a little out .001-.002 but nothing serious. These suggestions are probably excessive for most but I've found that the 1.3 is especially needy of service, IF, you're looking to get performance and hi-mileage out of if.

To find out the method for adjusting the valves refer to the FSM Factory Service Manual from Suzuki. It is a must have for any Samurai enthusiast.

     I forgot to mention that the engine has a mid-range camshaft from Calmini installed.

     Three oil changes have been performed so far but I will make sure I personally do one.

     Has a Weber Carb - it seem to idle rough until warmed up.

Just a few more question:
     How do I know if I have hydraulic tappets?

     What is the proper setting for adjusting the valves?

Solid. The FSM says: .010-.012 intake .012-.014 exhaust. I THINK. Can someone confirm? I'm thinking that I adjust .008 int and .010 exh on the aftermarket cams.

Anyone have a FSM to verify? I have this info book marked and written down in my manual but it's at home... :(

Would the clearances be different with an aftermarket cam? I don't have a book in front of me (at work) but I'd guess around 0.005-0.007 inch cold.

Maybe, I guess my point really was that I run 'tighter' than the manual and I have only aftermarket cams in my engines at the moment (side note). The two don't really have to go together. I'd run the stock tighter than recommended too because the valve drivetrain is quite noisy at recommened tollerances and I think a little more sluggish. YMMV

Now, where's that darn manual? :)

Ok, I got the ol' manual out. The following is the specs for a cold engine:

intake 0.0051-0.0067 in
exhaust 0.0063-0.0079 in

Obviously this is a converted number from metric. I mean who has a 5.1 thousands feeler guage? So, I'd say intake 0.006 and exhaust 0.007 or 0.008 would be a good factory number.

Hope this helps. I was pretty off on my memory?  ::)

Your Suzuki dealer, we have a dealer locator on our site, :) can sell you a Factory Service Manual. If that don't work for you, Hawk Strictly Suzuki and Trail Tough sell them.

Free stuff? Ask here!

If you can't find a FSM, try to find a Chilton's manual #66500. It seems to be the most reliable aftermarket book. The Haynes manual #90010 can help but doesn't seem to be as well writen or as popular as the Chilton book.

Valve Lash:     Cold                                  Hot
    Intake        0.13 - 0.17mm                  0.23 - 0.27mm
                 0.0051 - 0.0067in                 0.009 - 0.011in  

    Exhaust     0.16 - 0.20mm                0.26 - 0.30mm
                0.0063 - 0.0079in                0.0102 - 0.0118in

This is a great site and very informative for a Samurai Newbie.  I think I have a good rig it just needs a little tweaking.

I'd also add a front trac bar to that list of to-do's.  I put one in my lifted Sammy, and it made a world of difference in the handling.  Tightened up the front end considerably.  Also might want to consider putting in lockers to get ya where you want to go.
