How neccessary is the choke????
« on: October 25, 2005, 11:16:37 AM »
Hey guys.... my carb is playin up... for some reason, it doesn't want to turn the choke of...

ive opened up the carb with my mates dad an had a quick peek an it looks like the choke is stuck on....

my idea... as a temporary solution... was to try an jam it so the choke is off... (im gettin a new carb soon anyways) . what im not sure about is whether or not it would start properly in the mornings.

its really bad with the choke on... it drinks petrol like theres no tommorrow,  ticks over STUPIDLY high an runs really rough at certain RPM.... its a case of flat out or nothing really...

Any comments are good comments!!!!

As long as it is not cold outside, you will probably be fine, if it gets cold it will be a dead fight to get it started in the mornings.  Not sure how the carbs are made on these, but you might can just run a cable to control it like the old school cars.

The choke is for your convienience, it's
not needed to start and run, you just
need to use your foot to keep the engine
running, pumping the accelerator pump

It sounds like you are down under, spring
and summer are comming, no worries, open
the choke, the fast idle cam will still make
the idel too high, you need to loosten and
turn the choke adjustment so it's open

well... i live in the channel islands... which is near St Malo in france... so its not the hottest place in the world... but we never go below 5 degrees C.

when i opened te carb... the butterfly thing (think thats roughly what its called) was closed completely.. if i removed this part would it stop the choke from doing anythin?

cheers for the replies...

The butterfly thing controls the amount of air getting to the carb during cold weather starts, which require more fuel / less air. You can remove it or screw it open as Wild suggests. The carb just won't idle by itself untill the motor is warmed up.

There is a matter with the fast idle cam,
it will make teh idle too high unless it is
turned so it doesn't hold the throttle
linkage open

quick update.....

ive had a play around with the carb... an i think i may have fixed it!

i spent a while looking at everything... the i removed the linkages that activate the choke.... started her up... she started fine... but then just started revving an revving like  i had my foot to the floor..... something wrong... put it all back the way it was....

i then looked at the where the throttle cable attaches to the carb.... an pulled it so it was out as it could go... this seemed to lower the revs to the normal rate.... but it wouldn't stay there... an i could see how i coud make it stay there....

then i looked on top of the carb.... right by the air intake there is a small cog which has an arm that can move up an down that has teeth on it which turns the cog.... when this is pushed down.... it lowered the idle... an everything was fine  :o.... i used my gold ol friend Mr Cable tie an it was problem solved!!!!  it now runs perfect.... idles around 1000 (a bit lower one its cold, but doesn't cut out) loads more power!!!! no horrible petrol fumes when i accelerate... an realy smoothe power!!! it doesn't jump around an splutter when at low revs under strain.... its incredible!!!

for my good work i treated my self to a k+n air filter... which sounds AWSOME... bit kev though

oh well.... hope that info helps any one elso whos had this problem, i can send pictures if they wish.

cheers guys
