start it up and put your hand on top of the carb. Limit the amount of air getting through your fingers....if you can run up the RPM's then you have some air coming in somewhere.

Another thing about those years is that (at least the canadian models) had a small black box behind the speaker on the passenger side. This controls the carb and alot of mixture functions. I've seen some go and they screw up the mix and make it run real rich and crappy.

What does it sound like or do when you try to get it over the 2000rpm's? Does it sound muffled or stuffed? (muffler) does it stall? We need some more info to figure this out?

When was the last time you did a complete tune up? Plugs , wires, rotor cap and all the nice stuff.

i have put my hand on the top of the carb thinking i may have vacuum leak  but it stalls it out  plugs wires cap and rotor good    i have checked the spark with a st125 spark plug tester   we normally used it on hei  distributors because it took a good ignition system to fire one of those off   i have looked at that black box  unplugged it checked connections all of it looked good just dont know what its telling the carb to do when i try to crank it it will spinover several times  the just stop just like it out of time  but everything lines up on the timing too   i have noticed when it is spinning over an i hit the gas itll  pause like a timing issue but the only thing im doin is putting more fuel to it    i almost think  there is so much raw fuel being put it it tries to hydro lock on me    im getting a carb kit tomorrow   an my  friend has a sammy  same year an all with that black box    its gotta be something simple  thanks for the info   ill keep you posted
