charcoal canister??

On a 1.6 8valve, what is the charcoal canister for?  ???

All vehicles (gasoline) for many years have had
a charcoal canister, it is to clean the vapors
that could come from the fuel tank, and
every so often the engine will draw these
vapors into the intake manifold where they
get burned with the intake charge.

It's just another smog fighting device, along
with your non-venting gas cap, which forces
these vapors into the charcoal canister so they
don't get into the air without being burned

 i have 160,000km and iv never changed it. is that ok

Rhinoman reaches for the FSM again......

FSM says to inspect every 54,000 miles or 72 months

yeah, I know but the FSM is kept right beside the computer cos all the FI stuff is in there  ;D

My FSM is sitting right next to me too  ;D

I love this place, its completely spawned an interest in zuks and cars in general that wasn't there at all before. My knowledge about simple things such as how an engine works and just basic car knowledge has increased tenfold in my time here. I went from knowing basically nothing to still not knowing much but having a good general idea of the basics, but still very little hands on experience. I hope to change that with my conversion (which I'm not doing myself, I've got some very experienced help). Everyone here has been such a great help, thanks for getting me interested and destroying my wallet  ;D.

It can get clogged up over time or the internals can seperate out so it doesn't filter anymore. You're supposed to block off various pipes then blow through others and see what comes out.

After 140K miles I just tossed it and connected the in and out tubes together. Makes more access room under the hood and had absolutely no effect on drivability, power, or mileage, except for the 0.000002 MPG increase noted for the 2 lb reduction in weight.   ;D
