SJ410 with Manual Transmission Starting Problem
« on: July 22, 2005, 07:16:52 AM »
Hi guys,

Someone just gave me his old SJ410K as a gift and I am now trying to make it trail worthy again :)

I have already done the basic maintenance (oil change, cooling system flushed, spark plug, coil , wiring, carburator cleaned, new battery and cables, fresh belts, etc...)

Now, I know I have power to the starter, and the accessories are working, but the car won't start.

I suspect it's a problem with the clutch or transmission. The clutch cable was not connected when I got the car. I hooked it up, but the clutch doesn't seem to work properly. When I press the pedal at the max, the shaft on the transmission turn maybe 1/4 of a turn.

I know that the clutch must be pressed to the max for the car to start. Is there a switch that I can by-pass? Can anyone tell me where and how the clutch is supposed to be connected. ( Even better..some pictures)

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

You haven't filled in your location, UK models don't have a switch on the clutch. Does the engine turn over if so have you checked for a spark? I don't think the shaft does rotate very far, I will check my spare box when I get into the garage.

Yes, fill out your profile.  It can help others help you!

If there IS a clutch switch, shorting the wires together bypassing the switch will test to see if it is the switch or the wiring that is at fault.  My bet is that there is no switch.

One wonders if this is a job for the "clicky-switch fix" (a device that many vendors offer to solve starter circuit problems...)

As for the clutch, If the cable system is like the one on the Samurai, take a look at the clutch cable adjusting article on my FAQ website:

http://www.ackerdackerly.com/samurai/indexFAQ.html

Scroll down to "Samurai Drivetrain" on the Contents frame on the left.  It's the second item listed.

Hope this helps!
