Suzuki and Fiat Go for Joint Development of a New SUV

Suzuki Motor Corporation and Fiat Auto S.p.A. signed a memorandum of understanding today, which calls for the joint development of a new sport utility vehicle (SUV).
At a press conference held in Budapest today, Osamu Suzuki, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Suzuki Motor Corporation, and Giancarlo Boschetti, Chief Executive Officer of Fiat Auto S.p.A., emphasized that the new vehicles will be distinctively differentiated in styling from each other’s versions.

These new 5-door SUVs, which will be based upon the new Suzuki A-Segment Platform, will come in both gasoline engine and diesel engine versions. The production will begin in the latter half of 2005 at Magyar Suzuki Corporation’s Esztergom plant in Hungary.

Suzuki and Fiat will distribute the new SUV vehicles independently through their own dealership networks.

What?  ???

Where does it say anything about the Equinox in there?  Why do you assume that Suzuki gets it's designs from GM.  You do know it's the other way around, right?

Amd this has nothing to do with GM...

No, no, no. You misunderstood me.

I was wondering if Suzuki is doing this joint project with Fiat and selling the vehicles themselves (through their dealerships) because the Tracker is being replaced by the Equinox?

Uni-Body and Suzuki don't mix.  Have some faith.

Hmm... I guess GM found a market for its GM/Fiat engines and drivetrains. At 1.25L, the diesel Fiat builds is underpowered for 4-wheeling.

This will be an odd vehicle, no? 'Zuki makes great drive systems, but we'll scrap that an put in a Fiat. Then build it in Hungary. It ought to be interesting.  ???

(I wonder if they'll get Yugo to make their interiors while they are at it.  :P)

First of all, this is for the European market so far.  Also, there is nothing wrong with Hungary.  It is a very nice country with high standards of living and a strong work ethic like most other European nations.  I rather buy a vehicle made in Hungary then say China or Mexico.  Suzuki also has made diesel engines and it could very well be a Suzuki design.

See for yourself:

Actually they aren't a Suzuki engine. They have used a Mazda Diesel and a Peugot / Citroen Diesel.
